Warhawks Drop Home Opener To UNA, 4-2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Warhawks took a 2-1 lead into the half against Gulf South Conference foe North Alabama, but the Lions responded with three unanswered goals in the second to spoil the home opener of the Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team on Friday evening at the AUM Soccer Complex.
 
NOTES
• AUM drops to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the GSC.
• UNA wins its fourth in a row to improve to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Freshman Stine Svaerke scored her first career goal, tallying five shots on the night.
• Sophomore Allison Singleterry also posted her first career goal.
• UNA's Kylie Huey scored a pair of goals for the Lions.
Melissa Fernandez and Ruby Mendez each recorded an assist.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• UNA's Huey broke the scoreless tie in the third minute, taking a through ball from Beatriz Fernandes and sending it past a diving Felicia Wester to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
• Svarke took a long lead pass from Mendez up the middle and beat the keeper to her right with a well placed ball from eight yards out, tying the game at one goal apiece in the eighth minute.
• Singleterry scored on a breakaway up the middle on a give and go with Fernandez, beating the keeper with a low line drive shot to the lower righthand side in the 12th minute. AUM took a 2-1 lead into the half.
• UNA picked up the pressure in the second half, scoring the equalizer in the 55th minute on Huey's second goal of the contest, taking a cross from Michelle Hunter and beating the keeper to the lower right corner.
• The Lions took the lead after Shelby Wall's free kick was blocked up into the air, only to have Kristen Sinden to head it in to put UNA up 3-2 just 50 seconds after Huey's second.
• Hunter put the game away for the Lions in the 73rd minute after she took a cross from Wall and put it past the keeper in the lower left corner to give her squad a 4-2 advantage.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• AUM finished the match with 14 shots (five on goal) and only one corner kick, while UNA finished the night with 21 shots (nine on goal) and seven corner kicks.
• AUM's Felicia Wester recorded five saves in the contest, but fell to 1-2 on the season in goal.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host Gulf South Conference foe West Georgia on Sunday at the AUM Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
