Montevallo Outlasts AUM For 72-68 Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior forward Lafayette James-Core scored a team-high 27 points but the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team could not overcome Gulf South Conference foe Montevallo on Thursday evening, falling 72-68 to the Falcons at the AUM Gymnasium.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 8-11 on the season with a 4-8 mark in league play.
• Montevallo improves to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the GSC.
• Tonight marked the 50th meeting between the two programs, with AUM leading the series 27-23.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• James-Core tallied 27 points in the contest, tallying eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.
• Senior guard Reagan Eubanks scored 11 while recording a career-high six steals. He also posted three assists.
• Junior guard Desmond DeRamus tallied 10 points with a game-high seven assists.
• UM's Jamaar Taylor scored a team-best 27 points, with two assists, one steal and one block.
• Jamar Gilbert scored 17 for the Falcons, with three assists and three steals.
• Deshawn Jones also had 17 points for UM, while teammate Julio Guity pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• The Falcons jumped out to an 8-0 lead, before Eubanks hit a trey to put AUM on the board with 17:26 to go in the first half.
Kenneth Keith put AUM up 11-10 with a trey at the 14:10 mark to give the Warhawks their first lead.
• The two teams would trade buckets back and forth before AUM would inch away and take a 32-26 lead into the break.
• UM opened the second half on an 8-2 run, tying the game at 34 on a Gilbert free throw with 17:32 to play.
• Eubanks put the Warhawks back on top with a 3-pointer at the 16:54 mark to go up 37-34, before a 9-0 run by the Falcons gave UM a 43-37 advantage with 14:43 to play.
• UM would extend its lead to as much as 14 at 60-46 with 5:18 on the clock before AUM started a rally.
• AUM would go on an 18-5 run to pull to within 65-64 with :50 to play, but UM would hold the Warhawks to a pair of field goals down the stretch while converting 7-8 free throws to earn the four-point victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• UM outrebounded AUM 38-36.
• The Falcons outscored the Warhawks 40-24 in the paint.
• AUM Converted 12-34 3-pointers while UM hit just 3-14.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host GSC rival West Alabama at the AUM Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Opening tip is set for 4 p.m. on the campus of the Warhawks.
