MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a game that featured eight lead changes and three tie scores the University of West Alabama was able to pull away from Auburn Montgomery late in the second half to earn an 107-85 victory in Gulf South Conference men's basketball play on Saturday afternoon.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 8-12 on the season with a 4-9 mark in league play.
• UWA improves to 15-6 overall and 9-4 in the GSC.
• The Warhawks are now 4-8 lifetime against UWA, having lost seven in a row to the Tigers.
• The Tigers defeated AUM earlier this season, 91-77, in a non-conference game.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior guard
Desmond DeRamus tallied 20 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals for AUM, as he inches closer to 1,000 points for his career. He now stands at 985 over three seasons wearing the Orange & Black.
• Junior guard
Kenneth Keith tallied 20 points as well, with three assists and three rebounds for the Warhawks.
• Senior guard
Reagan Eubanks scored 14 with two rebounds and two assists for AUM.
• UWA's Charles Eaton recorded a game-high 28 points with nine assists, four rebounds and a steal.
• Domonique Alexander posted 22 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, adding two blocks to his tally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Warhawks to an early 8-4 advantage when Keith hit a 3-pointer with 18:00 to go in the first before Eaton would tie the game at 10-10 on free throws minutes later.
• Keith would give AUM an 18-13 advantage when a hit a jumper from eight feet out before UWA would respond with a 7-1 run to go up 20-19 with 12:35 to play in the half.
• The two teams would trade the lead back and forth over the next six minutes before the Tigers would inch away and take a 39-33 lead with 5:03 left in the first on an Eaton layup.
• Once again the two teams would trade baskets back and forth as the Tigers would take a 49-42 lead into the half.
• UWA would open the second half on a 13-6 run to take a 62-48 advantage with 14:24 to play before the Warhawks could start a run of their own. AUM would outscore UWA 15-2 over the next three minutes to cut the UWA advantage to 65-63 with 11:33 to play.
• The Tigers would respond with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes before DeRamus snapped the scoreless streak for the Warhawks with a jumper in the paint. AUM trailed 75-65 with 7:55 remaining.
• AUM cut the Tigers' lead to 78-73 with 6:12 to play on a pair of DeRamus free throws, but UWA would finish the game on a 29-12 run to end AUM's comeback bid.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• UWA outrebounded AUM 43-29.
• Both teams connected on 10 treys in the contest.
• The Tigers hit 25-33 free throw attempts, while AUM connected on 15-20.
• UWA outscored AUM 48-34 in the paint.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 30, when they play region-rival Tuskegee University. Game time is set for 8 p.m. on the campus of the Golden Tigers.
