Baseball Unable To Overcome Early Runs In 10-6 Setback Against North Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team hosted the University of North Alabama in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening, recovering from a six-run opening frame but unable to end the season-long eight-game homestand with a win in a 10-6 setback.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 11-13 overall.
• North Alabama moves to 16-10 overall.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior shortstop Nathan Langley went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored, RBI and walk.
• Senior center fielder Donovan Chandler went 2-5 with a run scored and RBI. He extends his on-base streak to a team-best 11 games with his first hit of the contest.
• Senior catcher Parker Moman went 1-4 with a home run and walk.
• Junior left fielder Brandon Baynes went 1-4 with two RBI.
• Junior second baseman Harrison Morris went 2-4 with a run scored.
• Junior right-handed pitcher Brett Lightsey tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball with one hit allowed and a pair of strikeouts.
• For North Alabama, Brandt Holland went 2-3 with a home run, three runs scored and a walk while Bryant Claunch (2-0) got the win on the mound after tossing 2.2 innings with one run allowed off three hits with five strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Using a combination of three doubles, three walks and three hit by pitches, North Alabama scored six runs in the top of the first.
• AUM cut into the deficit in the bottom of the first, with Langley getting on base via a double and scoring off a throwing error by the Lions to make it 6-1.
• Holland opened up the second stanza with a home run, extending the separation back to six at 7-1.
• Moman responded to the leadoff homer by UNA with one of his own in the bottom of the second, making it 7-2.
• AUM loaded up the bases in the bottom of the third off singles from Chandler and senior designated hitter Curtiss Johnson plus a walk for Moman, followed by a single from Baynes to send Chandler and Johnson home to make it 7-4.
• UNA added to their lead in the top of sixth, using back-to-back singles from Kyle Hubbuck and Holland to put runners on base before a single from Peyton Sockwell and sacrifice fly by Reid Homan plated the two baserunners. A single from Payton Thomas later in the frame scored Sockwell to create a 10-4 score.
• With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the sixth, Morris connected on a single and touched home three batters later on a bases-loaded walk for Langley to make it 10-5.
• Leading off the bottom of the eight with a walk, a double from Chandler sent junior right fielder Matthew Zielonko home to make it 10-6.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM tallied 11 hits while North Alabama had 12.
• The Warhawks left eight runners on base, UNA stranded 10.
• North Alabama recorded two errors.

The baseball team hits the road to take on Lee University in a three-game, Gulf South Conference series starting on Friday, March 23 at 5 p.m.
