CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped a pair of Gulf South Conference games to Lee University on Friday afternoon, falling in game one 3-2 and 9-3 in the second contest of the doubleheader.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 11-15 overall, 4-10 in Gulf South Conference play.
• Lee improves to 15-14, 8-6 in GSC action.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 1)
• Senior center fielder
Donovan Chandler went 1-4 with a run scored and RBI.
• Junior second baseman
Harrison Morris went 1-4 with run scored.
• Senior southpaw
Garrett Deloney (2-2) got the start on the mound and logged his first complete game of the season, second as a Warhawk, with three runs allowed, two earned, off seven hits with six strikeouts in the loss.
• For Lee, Fernando Ortiz went 2-2 with a pair of RBI and one run scored while Logan Workman (3-0) got the victory on the mound after holding AUM to two hits and no runs over the final 2.1 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
• Lee took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, connected on back-to-back to-back hits from Justen Freeman, Ortiz and Tyler Payne with two outs.
• Reaching base on a fielding error to begin the sixth inning, Chandler touched home plate on a Lee wild pitch to make it 2-1.
• AUM knotted up the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, getting Morris on base off a one-out single with a hit by pitch for junior right fielder
Aaron Hill advancing him to second before a single from Chandler sent him home.
• Lee responded to AUM's run in the bottom of the stanza, getting D. Ney on base via a one-out double with a single from Ortiz scoring him to make it 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1)
• AUM tallied five hits while Lee had seven.
• The Warhawks left seven runners on base, Lee stranded five.
• AUM recorded three errors, allowing one Lee run to score while the Flames had two errors, resulting in one run.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 2)
• Junior third baseman
Jonathan Brandt went 2-2 at the plate with two RBI, one double and one walk.
• Senior shortstop
Nathan Langley went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and one double.
• Redshirt sophomore
Hayden Friesen went 1-3 with a RBI and walk.
• Sophomore righty
Danny Caldwell threw 2.0 innings of relief, holding Lee to a pair of hits and no runs.
• For Lee, Peyton Meeker went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while Pat Morrow (3-0) got the victory after tossing 6.0 innings with three runs allowed off five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
• AUM jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, leading off with Chandler reaching base via a hit by pitch followed by a double from Langley and RBI groundout by Friesen to score the senior. With Langley on third following the groundout, a two-out single from Brandt platted Langley.
• Lee flipped the two-run lead in their favor in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on three Warhawks' errors to score four runs and take a 4-2 advantage.
• The Flames added four insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, getting Dalton Ney and Payne on base via a walk and single with a double from Jordan Howard sending both home. Chase Gadau reached base with a walk on the ensuing at bat, with him and Howard scoring on a single from Meeker.
• AUM cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth, leading off the frame with a Langley single before a two-out double from Brandt sent him home to make it 8-3.
• Reaching base with a two-out triple, Meeker scored for Lee in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch to create a 9-3 score.
