CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team concluded its first road Gulf South Conference series on Sunday afternoon, falling 10-4 to No. 4 Delta State.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 6-9 overall, 0-6 in Gulf South Conference action.
• No. 2 Delta State improves to 14-1, 6-0 in GSC play.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior
Nathan Langley went 3-5 at the plate, his seventh multi-hit game of the season, with a triple plus a pair of RBI and runs scored while tossing 1.2 innings without surrendering a hit.
• Junior infielder
Jonathan Brandt extended his hitting streak to a season-best eight games, posting his seventh multi-hit outing with two hits in four at bats with a double and RBI.
• Redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Hank Scott got the starting nod for AUM, getting the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, off seven hits in 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and a walk.
• For Delta State, Zach Shannon went 3-5 with six RBI and two home runs while Tyler Walton got the victory after keeping AUM off the scoreboard for 4.0 innings with only two hits allowed and three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• DSU scored first, using a two-out single from Shannon in the bottom of the first to score Brian Lane and make it 1-0.
• AUM took lead in the top of the third, as junior left fielder
Matthew Zielonko and senior center fielder
Donovan Chandler got on base via a single and hit by pitch with both scoring off a one-out triple from Langley. The senior scored on the ensuing at bat, a sacrifice fly by Brant, to take a 3-1 advantage.
• The Warhawks added a run in the fifth, leading off the inning with a single and double from Langley and Brandt in back-to-back at bats before a one-out single from junior
Aaron Hill plated Langley to extend the separation to 4-1.
• A pair of two-run homers from Emil Ellis and Shannon in the bottom of the fifth propelled the hosts to a 5-4 edge. The Statesmen added one more run in the inning, capitalizing on an AUM error to score Juwan Burney.
• Shannon hit his second home run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs and extending the Statesmen lead to 9-4.
• Delta State added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh off a sacrifice fly from Popovich, sending Morgan home and making it 10-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM tallied nine hits while Delta State had 11.
• The Warhawks left nine runners on base, DSU stranded eight.
• AUM recorded three errors, the hosts committed two.
UP NEXT
The baseball team stays on the road to take on Columbus State in a mid-week tilt on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 4 p.m. before returning to the AUM Baseball Field for a three-game, Gulf South Conference series against the University of West Alabama starting on Friday, Mar. 9 at 6 p.m.
