No. 12 Columbus State Upends Baseball 16-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team hosted its final midweek contest of the season at the AUM Baseball Complex on Wednesday evening, falling to No. 12 Columbus State 16-1.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 17-26 overall.
• Columbus improves to 33-7.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore outfielder Matthew Zielonko went 1-3 with a RBI.
• Senior shortstop Nathan Langley went 0-1 with two walks and a run scored.
• Senior first baseman Curtiss Johnson went 1-1 with a walk.
• For Columbus State, Garrett Kirkwood, Mason McClellan and Frank Wager all recorded home runs while T.J. Clark held AUM to one run of four hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 5.0 innings en route to the save.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Columbus State took the lead in the opening inning, using a leadoff single from Justin Evans to get a runner on base with the Cougar scoring the first run of the contest on a throwing error by AUM.
• AUM responded in the bottom of the first off a single from Zielonko, scoring Langley to even the score at 1-all.  
• Loading the bases off a hit, walk and AUM error, Columbus state reclaimed the one-run advantage in the top of the second off a single from Kirkwood, platting Austin Pharr to take a 2-1 lead.
• The Cougars extended the separation in the top of third, getting a pair of runners on base via a walk and single before a double by Chase Brown sent both home to make it 4-1.
• Starting with a pair of home runs that scored a combined three runs, the Cougars platted seven total in the top of the fourth to create a double-digit separation at 11-1.
• A hit by pitch and back-to-back singles to begin the top of the sixth loaded the bases for Columbus State, with a sacrifice fly from Kirkwood and home run by McClellan scoring four runs to create a 15-1 score.
• CSU added one more run in the top of the seventh, platting a Cougar on a bases-loaded groundout.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM had five hits, Columbus State had 18
• AUM left seven runners on base, Columbus State stranded 12
• AUM recorded two errors.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks close out the home docket with a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Christian Brothers, starting on Friday, April 20 at 6 p.m. with doubleheader and senior day recognition taking place the following day starting at 2 p.m.
