MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team scored a pair of runs in the opening inning to take the lead and never looked back on Friday evening, besting visiting Christian Brothers 11-2 in the first game of a three-game Gulf South Conference series.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 18-26 overall, 7-18 in Gulf South Conference play.
• Christian Brothers falls to 10-33, 4-21 in GSC action.
• The Warhawks' 14 hits are the most they have had at the AUM Baseball Complex this season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior infielder
Nathan Langley went 3-4 with a single, double and triple while scoring two runs and driving a pair of runs home.
• Sophomore outfielder
Matthew Zielonko went 3-4, a personal best, with one run, one RBI and one walk.
• Junior third baseman
Jonathan Brandt went went 1-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and one walk.
• Senior southpaw
Garrett Deloney got the win in his last start at the AUM Baseball Complex, tossing 6.0 innings with two runs allowed off seven hits.
• Junior righty
Harrison Morris earned his first save of the season after holding the Bucs scoreless over the final three frames.
• For Christian Brothers, Jared Cramer went 2-3 with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Christian Brothers used a single and double in back-to-back at bats from Taylor Angley-Holmes and Cramer with two outs in the bottom of the first to score the opening run of the contest.
• Loading the bases off a walk and back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first, a hit by pitch for senior first baseman
Curtiss Johnson sent junior second baseman
Logan Nix home with a fielders' choice on the ensuing at bat platting Langley to propel AUM to a 2-1 advantage.
• AUM extended the separation in the bottom of the second, as a one-out single from Nix sent junior right fielder
Aaron Hill round the bases before a sacrifice fly from Langley on the following at bat scored senior center fielder
Donovan Chandler to create a 4-1 lead.
• With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the third, a sacrifice fly by Cramer scored Jeff Goodwin to make it 4-2.
• AUM added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, using a one-out single from senior catcher
Parker Moman to score Brandt, making it 5-2.
• Highlighted by redshirt senior designated hitter
Forrest Smith's first hit and RBI as a Warhawk, AUM added six insurance runs in the bottom of the eight to take an 11-2 edge with Langley, Zielonko, Brandt, Hill and Chandler all recording one RBI in the frame.
