Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision To GSC Foe UAH

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery volleyball team fell to Gulf South Conference foe the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Friday evening, falling 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-12) to the Chargers at home in the AUM Gymnasium.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 9-8 on the season with a 0-6 mark in the GSC.
• UAH improves to 15-3 and 5-1 in league play.
• This was the second meeting of the season between the teams, with the Chargers earning a 3-0 victory on Aug. 24 in a non-conference match as apart of UAH's season-opening tournament.
• The Warhawks are now 0-4 against the Chargers.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior middle blocker Brianna Garvin led the Warhawks in kills in her first match back from injury, tallying 10 kills. Garvin also added a pair of blocks.
• Senior setter Carly Smart tallied 24 assists and a service ace for AUM.
• Freshman outside hitter Nyah Whittlesey led the team in digs with 16.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Chargers opened the first set on an 8-2 run before Whittlesey was able to break serve with a kill. UAH continued their strong play and pushed their advantage to 21-11 before sophomore middle blocker Jaylyn Felder delivered a kill to give AUM the serve. The two teams would trade points back and forth with each score four more, but the UAH advantage was too much. The Chargers would take the first set 25-16.
• The second set saw the two teams battle to an 11-11 tie before a service ace by Skylar Coppinger gave AUM a 17-15 lead. UAH would take a timeout to halt the Orange & Black's momentum and the two teams would trade serves back and forth. AUM fought off set point at 24-22 and was able to tie the frame on a pair of attack errors by the Chargers. With the score tied at 25-25 UAH was able to get a pair of kills from Lorah Yonce to give them the set 27-25 and a 2-0 match lead.
• Once again the third set saw the two teams battle back and forth until Garvin pulled the Warhawks to within a point at 10-9, but the Chargers would respond with a 5-1 run to go up 15-10. AUM would struggle to get its offense back on track the rest of the way, as UAH would finish the frame on a 10-2 run to take the third set 25-12.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• The match featured 19 tie scores and 10 lead changes.
• UAH recorded 9.0 team blocks while AUM had 2.0.
• AUM tallied three service aces while the Chargers had none.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will have a quick turnaround for their next match, hitting the road tomorrow morning to take on league opponent West Florida on the campus of the Argonauts. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
