Volleyball Finishes Huntingdon Invitational Undefeated

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Entering the final day of the 2018 Huntingdon College Invitational on a six-match win streak the Auburn Montgomery volleyball team won a pair of contests to close out the tournament undefeated, besting Agnes Scott College and host Huntingdon 3-0 to push their win streak to eight consecutive matches.  
 
NOTES
• AUM improves to 8-2 on the season with the pair of wins.
• The Scotties fall to 1-7 with the setback while the Hawks fall to 5-3.
• The Orange & Black's eight-match win streak is the longest in program history.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• AUM setters Payton Traff and Carly Smart directed 3-0 victories, with Traff tallying a career-high 25 assists against ASC while Smart tallied 29 assists against HC.
• Sophomore Jedaiah Daniels led the Warhawks in points against the Scotties, posting seven kills, 1.5 blocks and a service ace.
• Junior Sommer Rhea continued her strong play this season, tallying a career-high 14 kills against the Hawks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – AGNES SCOTT COLLEGE
• The Warhawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead capped off by a Jaylyn Felder kill. Felder then put the Orange & Black up 15-6 with a kill moments later, before the two teams traded points back and forth. AUM would take the set 25-14 on a kill by Rhea.
• ASC took the early advantage over the Warhawks, going up 6-3 on a Carmen Ross service ace. The Warhawks trailed by as much as 19-13 before AUM rattled off 10 consecutive points to go up 23-19. Marissa Elio would take a pass from Traff and put it home to complete the comeback and win the second set 25-20.
• Once again the Scotties would take an early advantage, going up 15-9 on a Bella Kammerer kill. The Warhawks would respond with an 11-4 run to go up 20-19 on a service ace by Traff. AUM closed out the match on a 5-2 run, winning 25-21 on a Daniels ace.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – AGNES SCOTT COLLEGE
• AUM tallied 40 kills while ASC posted 25.
• 16 different Warhawks played in the match.
• The Orange & Black posted eight blocks while the Scotties tallied three.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – HUNTINGDON COLLEGE
• The Warhawks took an early 7-2 lead over Huntingdon before eventually going up 16-5 on a kill by Rhea. HC responded with a 4-1 run but AUM would eventually push its lead to 24-12. The Hawks fought off set point for four serves but eventually a Huntingdon service error would give AUM the match 25-16.
• The second set saw the two teams battled to a 7-7 tie before AUM went on a 4-0 run. The Warhawks then went up 18-9 before HC went on a 7-2 run to cut the AUM advantage to 19-16. AUM then finished the set on a 6-2 run capped off by a Brianna Garvin spike that gave the Warhawks a 25-18 victory.
• HC started the third set strong, taking an 8-4 lead before Garvin broke service with a kill from Smart. The two teams then battled to a 17-17 tie before AUM won four straight points. Each team would score four points down the stretch with Rhea capping off the day with a kill from the left side to give AUM the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – HUNTINGDON COLLEGE
• AUM recorded 39 kills to just 25 for HC
• The Warhawks hit for a .278 clip while holding the Hawks to a mark of .085.
• Both teams tallied six aces, while HC out-blocked AUM 4-2.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will open up Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday evening when they travel to play the University of Montevallo. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. on the campus of the Falcons.
