MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a match that featured 22 lead changes including eight in the fifth set Auburn Montgomery volleyball team fell to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida on Thursday evening at the AUM Gymnasium, as the Warhawks fell by the final of 3-2 to the league-leading Argonauts in conference play.
NOTES
- The Warhawks fall to 9-7 on the season with a 3-4 mark in the GSC
- UWF improves to 13-5 overall and 6-0 in league play.
- The Argos won the match 25-17, 21-25, 16-25, 25-19, 16-14.
- The victory for the Orange & Black in the second set was the first set victory for the Warhawks over the Argos.
- AUM is now 4-2 in five-set matches this season.
- The Warhawks are now 0-5 lifetime against West Florida.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Senior outside hitter
Sommer Rhea tallied a match-high 23 kills on the night, adding a match-high 20 digs as well.
- Sophomore setter
Isadora Nicolai notched 50 assists to go along with 16 digs.
- Junior rightside hitter
Maria Nicolau tallied a career-high 12 kills for AUM, adding a dig and a block in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set saw the two teams battle to a 5-5 tie before UWF was able to go on a 12-3 run to take a 17-8 lead. After the teams traded side outs AUM went on seven-point rally to cut the deficit to 19-16, but the Argos responded with a 6-1 run to take the first set.
- The Warhawks were able to get the early advantage in the second set, taking a 12-10 lead on a 5-0 run capped off by a solo block by
Jaylyn Felder. UWF broke serve but the Orange & Black were able to push their advantage to 22-16. UWF responded with four straight points but a service error would give AUM a 23-20 lead. A pair of kills by Nicolau closed out the set as AUM was able to tie the contest at 1-1.
- AUM came out on fire in the third set, going up 17-6 before UWF was able to get its offense on track. A five-point rally by the Argos cut the lead to 17-11 but two quick points by the Warhawks pushed the advantage to 19-11. After a side out by UWF AUM scored three quick point to take a commanding 22-12 lead. The teams would trade side outs the rest of the way with the Warhawks taking the frame 25-16.
- The teams battled to a 7-7 tie in the fourth set before the Argos were able to rally for four straight points to go up 11-7. AUM was able to cut into the Argos' lead at 14-12, but a 7-1 run by the visitors pushed the score to 21-13. UWF was able to hold the Warhawks at bay the rest of the frame, tying the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 victory.
- The fifth set saw AUM take a 7-4 lead before UWF was able to score three quick points to tie the frame. The Warhawks were able to gain a small lead at 11-9 but four straight points gave the Argos a 13-11 advantage. AUM rallied for three straight points to reach match point at 14-13 but could not close out the contest, with UWF's Jordyn Poppen notching three straight kills to take the frame 16-14 and the match 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks recorded a .212 hitting percentage while the Argos hit for a .199 clip.
- AUM tallied 96 digs to just 80 for UWF.
- The Argos tallied nine service aces while AUM had seven.
