Warhawks Hold Off Golden Bears in Battle to the Final Seconds

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- In a back-and-forth contest that saw 19 lead changes and seven tied scores, the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team held off Miles College for a 66-64 win in a bout that came down to the final possession on Wednesday, Nov. 20. 
 
NOTEWORTHY
- With the win, the Warhawks improve to 3-3 on the season.
- The victory improves AUM's season record with Miles to 1-1, and their all-time series record to 3-1.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Maharrith Jackson notched his second career double-double for AUM, with a career-high 14-point, 12-rebound performance in the win. The junior forward has now scored 14 points in four of six games for the Warhawks. 
- Carlos Bell tallied a game-high 15 points, to go along with five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. The senior guard/forward has scored double-digit points in five of six games for AUM on the year.
- Stanley Davis and Darrion Taylor both added 10 points for the Orange and Black, with Davis pulling down five boards.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams battled back-and-forth over the game's first three and a half minutes, with the score reading 7-6 in AUM's favor at the 16:32 mark in the first.
- AUM would continue to stay efficient on offense, with a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to lead 16-7 with 13:20 to go in the first.
- The Warhawks would go up by nine one more time before the Golden Bears would cut AUM's lead to just four at the 7:00 minute mark, with AUM on top 23-19. 
- Miles would get back to within one point of AUM at 28-27, but the Warhawks would score the half's final six points to lead 34-27 at the break.
- The Golden Bears opened up the second half on a 12-3 run over the first five minutes, gaining a 39-37 lead at the 15:06 mark following a four-point possession. 
- Both squads would trade leads over the next eight minutes, with the score reading 49-49 with 7:34 left to play. 
- The game would see five of its seven tied scores come within the next six minutes, as the score would read 63-all with 1:15 left. 
- The final minute of action would see Jeremiah Bozeman earn his stripes for the Warhawks. After putting the Warhawks up 64-63 following a trip to the free throw line, the junior guard would come up with a huge blocked shot on the ensuing Golden Bear possession, and hit his next two free throws to put AUM up 66-63 with 28 seconds left in the game. 
- The Golden Bears would cut AUM's lead to 66-64 with 22 seconds left after a 1-2 trip at the line, and would have the ball back with 0.4 seconds left in the game after a pair of AUMs turnovers sandwiched between a Miles' missed layup. 
- Bell would knock away the Golden Bear's inbound pass with less than half a second left, however, to kill the remaining time on the clock and give way to the 66-64 final.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- For the fourth time this season, for different Warhawks scored in double figures.
- AUM shot 54 percent (13-24) in the first half, and 29 percent (7-24) in the second to finish at 41 percent (20-48) on all field goals in the game.
- The Warhawks shot just 35 percent (5-14) from beyond the arc, but converted on 80 percent (21-26) of their free throws on the night. 
- AUM out-rebounded Miles in the game, 37-28, marking for the fourth time in six games this season that the Warhawks have hauled in more rebounds than their opponent.        
- The Warhawks scored 24 points in the paint, 13 off of Miles turnovers, and got 10 points of contribution from their bench. 
 
UP NEXT
- The Warhawks will open up Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, Nov. 23 with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Lee University from the AUM Gymnasium.
