ABOUT THE WARHAWKS
The 2019-20 AUM men's basketball team will feature 11 returners from the 2018-19 squad, and four newcomers. The Warhawks will see their top two leading scorers in
Carlos Bell and
Darrion Taylor return for their senior campaign, in addition to their leader in rebounds, field goals made and field goal percentage in senior forward
Aaron Reddick
Bell and Taylor were two of four Warhawks to average double figures in scoring in 2018-19, with Bell averaging 14.4 points per game and Taylor averaging 12.7, to go along with a team-high 89 assists and 69 three-pointers made. Taylor currently ranks fourth in program history with 183 threes made, and needs just 67 more points to become the 19th member of AUM Men's Basketball's 1,000 career point club.
Reddick pulled down a team-best eight rebounds per game for AUM in 2018-19, to go along with a 10.9 points-per-game scoring average. The senior forward also led all GSC men's basketball players with a 61 percent field-goal percentage, 52 blocked shots and a 1.9 blocks-per-game clip.
Other returners include
Devorious Brown and
Stanley Davis, who appeared in all 28 games for the Orange and Black last season.
EJ Card, who logged 12 starts over 25 games played in 2018-19,
Michael Bryant and
Jalen Taylor will all also look to contribute at the guard position for AUM in 2019-20.
At the forward/center position,
Deven Tucker,
Darryl Jones and
Joshua Moore bring with them 54 combined games of experience from the 2018-19 season.
The Warhawks bring in four newcomers to the 2019-20 squad that will look to make a difference right off the bat. Junior guard
Jeremiah Bozeman and junior forward
Maharrith Jackson were tabbed top newcomers for the Warhawks in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Release on Thursday, Oct. 10.
Bozeman (Alva, Okla.) played two seasons at Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. prior to his arrival at AUM. Bozeman saw action in 25 games during his sophomore campaign with the Tigers in 2018-19, while scoring 40 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.
Jackson (Moscow, Tenn.) lettered for two seasons at SIU Edwardsville prior to joining the Warhawks. Jackson played in 32 games for the Cougars over two seasons, while shooting 43 percent from the field over that span.
Jamichael Smart (Gainesville, Fla.), comes to AUM from Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown, Md. where he averaged a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game, to go along with 15.7 points per contest in 2018-19.
Jaxon Hunter (Trussville, Ala.) played prep basketball at Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Ala., where he averaged 12.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per contest during his senior season.
AUM will play 13 home games, 14 road games, and two neutral-site contests in 2019-20. The Warhawks 2019-20 schedule features teams from the Sunshine State, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic and Great Midwest Athletic conferences, to go along with a 20-game GSC slate.
"With this schedule, we're definitely going to get to see where we are as a team," Head Coach
Michael Cheaney said. "Out of conference, we are playing teams that are all familiar with division-two postseason play, and the GSC looks like it's going to be super competitive from top to bottom. It's going to be a real test for us in our first year of full eligibility, and will for sure help us with regional and national rankings if we can compete night-in and night-out. If we want to be successful and accomplish our goals, we're going to have to beat good teams."
The Warhawks opened up the 2018-19 season against both Florida Tech and Rollins College in Melbourne, Fla., picking up a 71-65 win over Tech and suffering a 86-76 setback to Rollins.
