HOW IT HAPPENED
- The start of the contest featured both sides taking advantage of poor shooting from the field as both teams grabbed a plethora of rebounds in the early going. A Lee jumper got AUM on the board first and the senior would answer with another basket in the following minutes to tie the game at four. With the game deadlocked at four midway through the first, Morales hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Orange & Black another lead. The Wildcats, two minutes later, responded with a 3-pointer of their own to cut the Warhawk lead to 9-7 in the late stages of the first. Back-to-back offensive turnover allowed Fort Valley State to take a lead momentarily but the Warhawks were able to gain a 14-12 lead after one period of play.
- Wallace knocked down two free throws to start the second quarter. A full court press on the ensuing possession by the Warhawks forced a turnover that led to a Lee layup to push the lead to 18-12. FVSU answered with the next six points to tie the game at 18 and force the Warhawks first timeout of the afternoon. The Warhawks responded with a bucket out of the timeout to take a brief lead, however minutes later the Wildcats stormed down the court and it a 3-pointer to regain a one-point lead. With just over two minutes to go, a FSVU 3-pointer capped a 5-0 run to give the Wildcats a 26-22 lead just before the half. Fort Valley State ended the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 31-24 lead into the break.
- Brewster quickly put the Wildcat run to an end with a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second half to cut the deficit to four for AUM. Brewster would find Morales open in the paint on the following play for the Warhawks, to cut the lead even further. AUM netted a score on their fourth-consecutive possession to open the second half to take a 33-31 lead in the third frame. Two free throws from FVSU would put an end to the Warhawks 13-2 run, however the Orange & Black still sported a two-point lead. Brewster continued to light up the scoreboard in the third, knocking down three 3-pointers to give AUM a 43-33 lead halfway through the period. The end of the third quarter continued the trend of the early stages as the Warhawks continued to put up points and took a 52-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.
- The Warhawks started the fourth quarter with two trips to the free throw line. The Orange & Black were able to knock down their shots to keep a 59-43 lead over the Wildcats to begin the final frame of action. AUM would later jump out to a 6-0 run, capped by a Milord jumper to give AUM a 20-point lead. The Orange & Black kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter, taking a 73-57 victory.
