Women’s Basketball Falls in Final Seconds at West Georgia, 56-55

CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team led for 32 minutes and 57 seconds of game time on Thursday, Feb. 21 against West Georgia, but a late charge from the Wolves in the final period allowed them to pry away the victory from AUM's hands for the 56-55 Gulf-South-Conference win.

NOTES
- With the loss, AUM's record drops to 4-22 overall and 3-15 in GSC action.
- Evelina Avleeva, Jordan Brewster and Makaylla Bullard combined to score 45 of AUM's 55 points on the evening.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Avleeva led AUM in both the scoring and rebounding departments, finishing with 16 points and one board shy of a double-double at nine.
- Brewster tallied 15 points, knocking down a game-high five threes. Brewster now sits at 98 three-pointers made for the 2018-19 season, just 10 back of the single-season record.
- Bullard accounted for 14 points on the evening, to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
- Victoria Morales added eight points, in addition to pulling down nine rebounds, dishing out three assists and blocking two shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- West Georgia opened up the ballgame on a 5-0 scoring run over the first two minutes of action, but AUM would respond with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 9-7 lead with 5:09 left to play in the first.
- With the score sitting tied 9-9 with 4:45 left in the first period, AUM would rattle off a 10-4 run to finish period number one up 19-13 over West Georgia.
- The Wolves cut their deficit to four points with a pair of free throws to begin the second period, but the Warhawks would rattle off a 7-2 run over the next five minutes of the quarter to build their lead back to 26-17 with 4:36 left in the half.
- West Georgia would again respond, this time cutting AUM's lead to just six at 29-23 with 1:08 to go in the second, but AUM would score the quarter's final five points to take their largest lead of half number one into the break at 34-23.
- AUM jumped out to their largest lead of the game on a layup by Morales to put them up 36-24 over UWG with 9:17 to go in the third. West Georgia would respond, however, with a 13-2 scoring run over the next six minutes to trail AUM by just one point at 38-37 at the 2:32 mark.
- Both teams would battle back and forth over the next two minutes, with AUM leading 44-41 over the Wolves at the end of the third.
- West Georgia would tie the game up at 44-44 with 7:15 to go in the game, but AUM would quickly respond to go back up 49-46 on a three-ball from Bullard at the 6:10 mark.
- AUM and UWG would battle back and forth over the next several minutes, with the Warhawks clinging to a 55-54 lead with one minute left to play after a pair of successful UWG free throws.
- AUM would miss a potential game-winning three-pointer on their next possession, while the Wolves would earn a trip to the free-throw line on their next possession, ultimately taking the lead 56-55 after both shots from the charity stripe fell.
- The Warhawks would get one final shot at taking the lead, but a turnover off of the ensuing inbound pass would give way to the Wolves' win.

QUOTING THE COACH
"We played well enough to win the game, but, once again, our failure as a group to value the ball and to block out cost us the game," Head Coach Sean Page said. "We gave them 34 extra possessions in the game, with our 16 turnovers and 18 offensive rebounds allowed, and lost by just one point on the road. It's super disappointing, because we were the better team, but we've got to move on and get ready for senior day Saturday against Shorter."

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- AUM converted on 18-51 (35.3 percent) shots from the floor, the same exact overall shooting numbers that they put up against the Wolves on Feb. 14 in their matchup in Montgomery.
- AUM shot 47 percent (11-23) from the field in half number one, while going just 25 percent (7-28) on field goals in quarters three and four.
- The Warhawk defense held West Georgia to just a 15 percent (2-13) shooting night from the three-point line.
- West Georgia won the rebounding battle, 42-40, while hauling in 18 offensive rebounds.
- AUM put up 13 assists on the evening, while holding West Georgia to eight.

UP NEXT
- The Warhawks will play their final home game of their 2018-19 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 23 against Shorter University at 2:00 p.m. Senior forward Evelina Avleeva will be recognized post game, as part of senior day festivities.
