Warhawks Swept by Argos in Sunday Doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped a pair of Gulf-South-Conference contests to the Argonauts of the University of West Florida on Sunday, Feb. 24 from the AUM Baseball Complex.

NOTES
- The Warhawks fell 15-2 in game one, and dropped game number two 12-8.
- With the pair of losses, AUM's record drops to 8-6 overall, and 3-3 in GSC action.
- The Warhawk' s all-time series record against West Florida now sits at 23-26.

GAME ONE
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Kyle Khoury led AUM at the plate in game one, knocking in the Warhawk's only two runs of the game on his first career home run for the Orange and Black.
- Josh Flowers registered both a run scored and a hit in the game, while Zach Feaster knocked a double in the contest.
- Dalton Cobb, Jonathan Brandt and Grayson Blackwell all accounted for two base hits in game one.
- Troy Jones (1-2) took the loss on the mound for AUM in the game. The junior righty struck out four batters, while allowing three earned runs over five innings of work.
- Ryan Burkett, Aaron Hill and Alex Graulich combined to toss the final four frames of game one, with Hill logging a career-high six strikeouts over 2.1 innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- West Florida wasted no time in game one getting on the scoreboard, as the Argos would collect three straight one-out singles and a sac fly to jump out to a 2-0 lead over AUM in the first.
- After extending their lead to 3-0 on a solo shot to left center in the third, the Argos would tack on another run in the fifth to lead 4-0.
- The Warhawks would cut their deficit in half with just one swing of the bat their next time up in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of Khoury's two-run blast to left that also plated Flowers.
- The Argos added four runs on six hits in the top of the sixth, to extend their lead to 8-2.  UWF did all of their damage in the sixth with two outs, with four consecutive singles and a double accounting for the damage done.
- After adding another run in the eighth to lead 9-2, the Argos broke the game open in the top of the ninth, plating six runs on four hits. UWF slugged a solo shot, an RBI double and single, and a grand slam to right field to tally the game's final runs.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Argonauts outhit the Warhawks in game one, 21-10, with seven of the Warhawk's nine starters recording a base hit.
- Khoury threw out a season-high three West Florida base runners in the ball game.
- AUM matched a season high, using five different pitchers in the setback.
- The Warhawks 15 runs given up in a game marks for the most they've surrendered to an opponent in 2019.
- AUM stranded 12 runners in the game, while the Warhawk pitching staff stranded eight Argonaut runners.

GAME TWO
STANDOUT PERFOMRERS
- Quinterrious Arrington led AUM offensively in game two, collecting two hits, while driving in two runs and scoring once.
- Aaron Hill and Harrison Morris both knocked in a pair of runs, and logged a hit and a run.
- Matthew Zielonko launched his team-leading third home run in the game, while also picking up two hits and scoring two runs.
- Jonathan Brandt scored a pair of runs, while also picking up an RBI on one base hit.
- Cobb also added a pair of base hits in game two.
- Hank Scott (0-1) took the loss on the hill for AUM, striking out three and surrendering eight earned runs over two innings of work.
- Sam Steigert and Connor Smith combined to toss the final five frames, while allowing just four hits and giving up just one earned.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Argos were once again quick to crack the scoreboard, putting up a three-spot in the first frame. A one-out double, aided by a fielding error in center, followed by a two-run blast to left field made up for the damage in the first.
- UWF plated a combined eight runs over the second and third innings, highlighted by a five-run second inning that came on three West Florida hits, and an AUM throwing error.
- The Warhawks would plate their first run of the game in the fourth inning, when Brandt was plunked by a UWF pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Arrington.
- AUM brought the game back to within striking distance in the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits. AUM loaded the bases with nobody out on back-to-back singles from Cobb and Zielonko, followed by a walk from Brandt. The Warhawks would proceed to strikeout and ground into a fielder's choice, but a dropped foul ball with two away would give AUM new life, and the Warhawks would capitalize.  An RBI base on balls from Hill, followed by a pair of two-RBI knocks from Morris and Arrington would bring AUM's deficit to just 11-6 after six innings.
- After seeing the Argos tally a run in the seventh, AUM would go into full rally mode in their last at-bat. Zielonko would lead off the inning with a towering solo shot to left field, followed by a sharp single up the middle from Brandt.
- Hill would go on to plate Brandt and pinch-hitter Zach Cumbie, who was hit by pitch one batter prior, on a single down the left-field line to bring the game to 12-8.
- A game ending 6-4-3 double play by the Argos, however, would put a bow on the AUM comeback attempt.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks were once again outhit by West Florida in game two of the doubleheader, 14-9.
- Six errors in total were made in game two, with four of those belonging to AUM.
- Fourteen of the Warhawks 21 outs in the game came via the punch-out.
- AUM left seven runners on base in game two, while the Warhawk staff stranded 12 Argo base runners.
