KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball defeated Millersville University and Indiana-Pennsylvania on Thursday, earning a 13-0 victory in five innings over the Marauders before capturing a 5-0 victory against the Crimson Hawks to close out the day.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 26-5 on the season with a 7-0 mark at neutral sites.
• MU falls to 7-9 on the season while IUP dropped to 3-8.
• The Warhawks did not allow a single run in four games at the event.
• AUM's defense did not commit an error over four games.
• The Orange & Black outscored opponents 25-0.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore
Michaelyn Foster went 5-for-7 at the plate with six runs batted in, tallying her third home run of the season.
• Junior
Chanel Newcomer (5-2) tallied six strikeouts in 4.0 innings to pick up the win against the Marauders. With her six K's Newcomer now has eclipsed 200 strikeouts for her career (204).
• Freshman
Savanna Holmes (2-1) tossed a complete game shutout against IUP, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out five in 7.0 innings of work – her longest outing of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MILLERSVILLE
• AUM struck first blood with a run in the top of the first, when Foster scored from second on a fielding error to give the designated visitors a 1-0 advantage.
• After
Hannah Dailey drew a walk to start the third inning
Jaycie Walker tattooed her ninth home run of the season with a blast to straightaway center to push the Warhawk advantage to 3-0. With only one out and runners at second and third,
Caroline Burns grounded out to short to plate
Olivia Aycock from third to give AUM a 4-0 lead.
• Dailey drove in a run from second with a single to right-centerfield in the top of the fourth before Walker tallied a double to left-center to drive in Dailey to push the Orange & Black's lead to 6-0.
• The top of the fifth saw the Warhawks explode for seven runs in the frame, highlighted by a
Morgan Duschell triple to center and a Foster grand slam to left to give AUM a 13-0 advantage.
•
Cydney Sizemore entered the contest in the bottom of the fifth and recorded a strike out and a pair of ground outs to end the contest in five innings.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – MILLERSVILLE
• The Warhawks scored 13 runs on nine hits with no errors.
• The Marauders were held scoreless on one hit with two errors.
• Brianna White was credited with the loss for MU, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits with 5 K's.
HOW IT HAPPENED – IUP
• The Warhawks were the designated home team against the Crimson Hawks, and would score in the bottom of the first when junior catcher
Abby Krueger blasted a two-run home run to center with two outs to give AUM a 2-0 lead after one.
• AUM added another run in the bottom of the third with two outs on the board, when Foster hit a base knock up the middle to plate Aycock from second.
• The Warhawks pushed two more across in the fifth, with Foster doing the honors once again. After Aycock doubled down the leftfield line Foster belted a hit to right-center to score Aycock from second to give the Warhawks a 4-0 lead. Foster reached second on the play, then advanced to third on a passed ball by IUP. Krueger would draw a walk, and the Orange & Black would pull off a successful double steal to go up 5-0.
• Holmes took a no-hitter into the sixth, which was broken up by IUP's Rachel Rodriguez who singled to right to end the no-no. After being sacrificed over and advancing to third on a passed ball, Rodriguez was stranded at third after Holmes notched a strike out and a line out to first to end the threat.
• Holmes tallied a strike out and two ground outs to close out her first complete game victory of her career.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – IUP
• The Warhawks scored five runs on six hits with no errors.
• The Crimson Hawks were held scoreless on one hit with no errors.
• Lauren Zola fell to 1-3 on the year after allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
