MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After falling in game one of a three-game series to Gulf South Conference foe #21 Mississippi College on Friday evening the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team earned a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon to take the series, winning 2-1 in game one and 3-0 in game two.
NOTES
- AUM improves to 29-7 on the season with a 9-6 mark in GSC play.
- MC falls to 23-8 overall and 9-5 in league games.
- The Warhawks are now 5-4 in GSC home games this season.
- The Orange & Black improve to 4-1 lifetime against MC.
- With the two victories the Warhawks eclipse last year's win total of 28.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Freshman
Savanna Holmes took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in game two, tallying eight strikeouts while allowing only one hit in 7.0 innings of work.
- Freshman shortstop
Olivia Aycock went 5-for-6 at the plate with a run batted in and two stolen bases. Aycock has now tallied 36 stolen bases on the season and needs just one more swipe to tie teammate
Parker Pinholster's single season record of 37 set back in 2017.
- Sophomore
Morgan Duschell went 3-for-6 on the day with a pair of triples in game one, tying the AUM record for triples in a single game. Duschell also had a run scored and a RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- After AUM stranded baserunners at third in the bottom of the first and second, the Choctaws made the Warhawks pay in the top of third after Morgan Bradford hit a single down the rightfield line with runners at first and second to drive in the game's first run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
- The Warhawks responded in the bottom of the fourth, when Duschell tripled to left to drive in Pinholster from first to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman
Brooke Perrigin then singled down the leftfield line to drive in Duschell to put the Orange & Black up 2-1.
- After neither team was able to plate a run in the fifth and sixth innings, the Choctaws would go 3-up-3-down in the top of the seventh as the Warhawks evened the the series at 1-1.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME ONE
- The Warhawks scored two runs on seven hits with no errors.
- MC tallied one run three hits with two errors.
- Senior
Natalie Johnsey picked up the win for the Warhawks to improve to 3-1 on the season. Johnsey allowed one run on three hits over 4.0 innings of work with a season-high four strikeouts.
- Junior
Chanel Newcomer picked up her second save of the season, tossing 3.0 shutout innings allowing only one walk and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- The two teams battled to a scoreless tie over four innings, with Holmes allowing only a pair of walks through the top of the fifth.
- Pinholster then led the bottom of the fifth off with a double off the wall in centerfield to get a runner in scoring position for the Warhawks. After a sacrifice bunt by
Abby Krueger got Pinholster over to third,
Caroline Burns laced a single to left to drive in the game's first run. After a ground out pushed Burns to second, a throwing error by the MC shortstop allowed
Jaycie Walker to reach second and Burns to score to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Walker was pinch-run for by
Jasmine Thompson who was driven in on a slap single by Aycock to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.
- After a scoreless sixth Carly Crawford notched the first hit of the game for the Choctaws in the top of the seventh, recording a base knock to left with one out to wreck the no-no for Holmes. After issuing a walk to the next batter Holmes forced an infield fly for the second out of the frame. A wild pitch put runners at second and third before Holmes forced a ground out to short to give the Warhawks the doubleheader sweep.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME TWO
- The Warhawks tallied three runs on seven hits with one error.
- MC was held scoreless on one hit with two errors.
- Holmes improved to 3-2 on the season with her second one-hit complete game shutout of the season.
