Warhawks Fall To Reigning Champs 6-1 In Men’s Tennis Play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery men's tennis team hosted the defending national champions Columbus State on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the No. 2 Cougars 6-1 at the AUM Tennis Complex.

MATCH NOTES
  • AUM falls to 3-2 on the season in their first match since Feb. 22.
  • Columbus State climbs to 9-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • -In a match that featured the Warhawks top singles player, Eban Straker-Meads was tasked to face off against CSU's number on KP Pannu. Pannu was able to take the match 6-2, 6-2.
  • -Alvaro Terron was able to net the Warhawks lone singles victory on Wednesday afternoon, registering a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Columbus's State's number two Zach Whaanga.
  • -The longest match of the afternoon belonged to AUM's Fransisco Jimenez and CSU's Alvaro Regalado. Regalado was able to take the first game of the match 6-2, but Jimenez was able to fight back for a 7-6 victory in game two before ultimately falling in game three 10-2.
  • -Jose Garcia was tasked to play in the four slot for AUM but fell to Arnold Kokulewski in consecutive games 6-3, 6-3.
  • -Santiago Veglia dropped the No. 5 match against Matei Avram, falling 6-2, 6-2.
  • -Giovanni Bellio got the nod in the six position for the Warhawks against the reigning champs, facing off against Columbus State freshman Tommaso Schold. Schold prevailed against Bellio 6-4, 6-2.
 
  • -In doubles play, Straker-Meads and Terron were paired in the top slot for AUM, taking their 1-0 record into their match with Regalado and Whaanga. The Cougars were able to take a doubles point away from AUM, winning the set 6-1.
  • -Jimenez and Santiago Veglia have been paired together in doubles play for the majority of the season and faced off against Kokulewski and Matei Avram. Columbus State would be able to take the match against the two Warhawks 6-3.
  • -Garcia and Marcus Lind registered the lone win in doubles play for the Warhawks, defeating Pannu and Schold 6-4.

UP NEXT
The men's side will accompany the women to Jackson, Miss., to take on Division I opponent Jackson State. The dual match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The match against the Tigers will be the first of a five-game road trip.
