Cobb Homers Twice, Baseball Burned By Flames In Series Opener 7-6

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite allowing the first six runs of the game, the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team was able to battle back to cut the deficit to one, before falling to Gulf South Conference foe Lee 7-6 at home on Friday night.

NOTES
- The Warhawks fall to 25-22 in 2019, with a 12-15 record in conference action
- Lee improves to 23-24 on the year, with an 11-14 record in GSC play. 
- The AUM bullpen threw a combined eight innings and allowed just one earned run.
- Dalton Cobb extends his home run streak to six straight games.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Flames pitcher Randall Coxwell recorded a save by throwing 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs to shut the door for Lee.
- Quinterrious Arrington reached bsae safely five times against the Flames, recording three hits and one walk.
- Ryan Burkett was one of the Warhawks' most effective relievers, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing three hits while striking out four without allowing a run. 
- Lee's Alan Smith registered three hits while driving in two runs for the Flames in the winning effort.
- Todd Burkett was extremely effective out of the bullpen, throwing 4.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one run. 
- Cobb continued his hot streak at the plate, going 4-4 with two RBI. The junior also crossed the plate a team-high three times.
- Both teams registered double-digit hits on Saturday, with Lee notching 13, while AUM was able to knock 10 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lee jumped out to an early lead off of AUM pitcher Josh Flowers in the first. The Flames were able to push across three runs in the opening frame on a walk, groundout and an RBI single to go ahead 3-0.   
- The Flames would extend their lead by a pair in the second inning, on an RBI groundout by Miguel Pimentel. The next batter Smith brought home teammate Fernando Ortiz on a single to right field.
- With AUM trailing 6-0 heading into their half of the fourth inning, Cobb would hit his first home run of the day against Lee starter Logan Workman to bring across the Warhawks' first run of the game.
- The Warhawks would keep crawling back in the bottom of the fifth. With Arrington at the plate and teammate Zach Feaster in scoring position, Arrington raced a single through the right side of the infield to bring the score to 6-2.
- AUM was not done after that, however, as Matt Zielonko was able to force an error by the Flame second basemen, allowing Arrington to score, cutting the Lee lead in half. Cobb would add his second homer of the day in the sixth inning, making it a two-run ballgame.  
- Both teams would be held off the board in the seventh inning, however, in the top of the eighth, Pimentel would drive in his second run on a home run off of reliever Aaron Hill to add insurance for his Flames.  
- The Warhawks would not go down without a fight as in the eighth and two runners in scoring position, shortstop Jonathan Brandt would drive home two runners with one swing, with a two-run single to left field, bringing the game to 7-6.
- AUM would get the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth. Arrington would strike out to lead off the inning but would reach on a wild pitch. However, the next three batters would be unable to bring home the Warhawk center fielder.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Lee outhit AUM 13-10 in the contest.
- AUM was able to limit the errors to just one, while Lee recorded two mishaps.
- The Warhawks recorded two walks on Friday night, while Lee was able to draw six base on balls.  

UP NEXT
- AUM will conclude the season with a doubleheader against Lee on Saturday, April 27 with game one starting at 1 p.m. Before game on, the seniors on the team will be recognized with a pregame ceremony.
