Late Push Lifts #21 Valdosta State Over Warhawks, 95-83

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team could not extinguish a late offensive push from #21 Valdosta State in their Gulf South Conference contest on Saturday, Jan. 25, as the Blazers knocked down eight of their final 10 shots and outscored AUM 25-14 over the final eight minutes to clinch a 95-83 victory over the Warhawks 

NOTEWORTHY
- The loss snaps AUM's three-game winning streak and brings their record to 9-10 overall and 4-7 in GSC play.
- Four different Warhawks scored in double figures in the game, led by Carlos Bell's 21-point effort.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Bell notched his third double-double of the season while matching a career-high with 12 rebounds. The senior guard's 21 points marked for his seventh-straight contest in which he's scored in double figures and the seventh time he's scored 20 or more points in a game in 2019-20.
- Maharrith Jackson finished with 17 points, while Darrion Taylor scored 14 points and shot 4-6 from the three-point line. 
- Stanley Davis added 10 points off of the bench, while Joshua Moore accounted for eight points, five rebounds and a career-best five assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams tallied 10 points over the first four minutes, with Moore's transition layup at the 15:55 mark knotting it up at 10-all. 
- The Warhawks would knock down three of their next five shots, as part of a 9-2 run over the next 1:44, to lead 19-12 at the 13:59 mark.
- AUM would put together another long scoring run from the 12:45 to the 11:36 mark, where the Warhawks knocked down three of four shots and outscored Valdosta State 10-2 to take their largest lead of the game at 28-17.
- The Blazers would settle into a groove over the next three minutes and change, however, outscoring AUM 12-2 to bring the score to 30-29 in favor of the Warhawks with 7:26 to go until halftime. 
- Valdosta State outscored the Warhawks 15-11 over the final seven minutes of the half, knocking down seven of eight free throws over that time to take a 44-41 lead into the break.
- VSU outscored AUM 8-4 over the first 2:17 in the second half to lead 53-45 with 17:43 left. 
- The Warhawks would respond over the next three minutes with a 9-2 run, with an Aaron Reddick jumper in the paint bringing their deficit to just 55-54 with 14:31 remaining. 
- AUM took their final lead of the game at the 12:26 mark, when Jackson banked in a fast-break layup to put the Warhawks up 59-57.
- Valdosta State would answer with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes, to lead 66-59 with 10:21 to go. 
- After a Bell free throw cut AUM's deficit to just 70-69, Valdosta State made six of their next seven shots and outscored the Warhawks 15-4 to lead 85-73 with 4:42 remaining. 
- The Warhawks got back to within nine points of the Blazers twice over the final four minutes, but could not get any closer as the final score would read 95-83 in favor of VSU.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- AUM shot 36 percent (15-41) in the first half and 50 percent (15-30) in half number two to finish at 42 percent (30-71) for the day.
- Both teams knocked down seven three-point shots in the contest, with AUM going 7-14 and Valdosta State going 7-21.
- Points in the paint proved to be pivotal, with the Warhawks scoring 42 points down low and the Blazers tallying 48.
- Valdosta State won the rebounding battle, 42-39.
- AUM scored 10 points off of turnovers, while the Blazers scored 22 points off of Warhawk miscues.

- The Warhawks will return home for a Thursday, Jan. 30 contest against West Florida. Tip-off from the AUM Gymnasium is set for 8:00 p.m.
