HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Orange & Black came out on fire from the field against the rival Falcons, taking an early 7-4 lead thanks to contributions from
Jordan Brewster,
Jemaiya Lee and Carter. Two free throws would cut the Warhawk lead to one, but the lead would grow for the Warhawks soon after as Morales registered her first three points of the game on a 3-pointer. A cold spell would await both teams as neither side would record a bucket for three minutes of game action. Teams would trade layups as the score ran to 12-8 in favor of the Orange & Black with four minutes remaining.
Aaliyah Milord and Richardson would contribute to the scoring efforts to close out the first and AUM would take a 18-12 lead going into the second period.
- Both sides traded layups to start the second quarter, and the score remained a six-point lead for the Warhawks. Carter would start to come alive in the early stages of the second frame, earning four-straight points for AUM to extend the lead to 25-19. Morales would cap off a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 10. Montevallo cut the lead down to four with just over two minutes remaining thanks to a 3-pointer from Jordan Jones, but baskets from Milord and Richardson would push the score to 35-28 in the late stages of the first half. The Warhawks eventually went into the locker room with a 35-30 lead over the Falcons.
- Carter had the finishing touch going to start the second half as she would hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession and later followed it up with a driving layup in the paint to extend the AUM lead to 10. After the impressive start for the Warhawks, both teams would go cold from the floor and struggled to knock down shots, allowing Montevallo to cut the lead to seven. Once again, Carter would help push the Warhawk lead to 15 with three minutes remaining after a pair of 3-point shots. Five straight points from the Falcons cut the lead back to nine. The Bessemer Ala., native set a new career-high in points after third 3-pointer of the half to regain a 14-point stronghold. Milord came down the court to hit a 3-pointer with seconds remaining to take a 57-43 lead going into the fourth quarter.
- Morales scored the Warhawks' first four points of the fourth quarter after knocking down a foul shot and a 3-pointer to push the AUM lead to 61-46. Three minutes went by without a bucket by either team, but the scoreless streak was broken when Morales hit an open 3-pointer to push the score to 64-46. A questionable jump ball led to a Montevallo possession where they scored just their fourth point of the quarter on the ensuing possession. Defense prevailed at the end of the game and sent the Warhawks to their first-ever Gulf South Conference victory, defeating the Falcons 69-50.
