Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jason Martin

AUM’s Comeback Bid Falls Short In 48-40 Loss to West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Despite scoring just eight points in the first half, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team cut the deficit to as little as two before falling to the West Georgia Wolves 48-40 on the road in Gulf South Conference action.

Head coach Sean Page said after the game, "I thought we were pretty good defensively but had trouble scoring. We actually made one more field goal than them and the same amount of 3-pointers but went 7-14 from the foul line. Twenty-seven turnovers is also a huge problem we need to fix."

The Warhawks had difficulty finding their rhythm offensively on Tuesday night, leaving Makaylla Bullard as the team's leading scorer with 10 points. The Huntsville native had a fine all-around outing, securing five rebounds to go with a pair of assists and a steal.

Sydney, Australia native Gracie Lee, had her best game of the season in the loss to the Wolves, as she helped aid a late comeback attempt. She finished with eight points while grabbing five rebounds and two steals.

It was déjà vu for the Warhawk offense to start the game, as just like the season-opener against Shorter, it took over three minutes for AUM to find their first basket before Catlin Carter nailed a three for the game's first points.

That would be the entirety of the Orange & Black's offense until the 5:36 mark of the second quarter when Bullard knocked down a triple to cut the Wolves' lead to 16-6. The Warhawks would head into the locker room at halftime with just eight points under their belts, marking the smallest point total since November 30, 2017.

The Orange & Black came out soaring to start the second half, getting contributions from a myriad of different players offensively. Lee led the charge in the middle portions of the third quarter, helping the Warhawks to a 13-2 run to cut the lead to nine to finish the third frame.

AUM cooled off to start the fourth period of play, allowing the Wolves to jump back out to a double-digit lead early in the final stage. Bullard would net seven points in the fourth quarter and, along with Lee, helped fuel a comeback late in the fourth, cutting the lead to 36-29.

The Warhawks would surge from there as with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter. AUM was able to cut the score down to 40-38 after trailing by as many as 20 in the second half.

AUM, however, was only able to muster two more points for the remainder of the game, and West Georgia was able to capitalize on their opportunities at the free-throw line. The Wolves would come away with their second win of the season, winning the contest 48-40.

The Warhawks will return to action for their first Friday, Saturday series of the season when they play host to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida. Friday's game from the AUM Gymnasium is slated for 6 p.m.
