Brewster Climbs Historical Leaderboard In Loss to Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Junior guard Jordan Brewster made history with her second 3-pointer of the evening, moving her into sole possession of fourth place for career 3-pointers made with 209 in Auburn Montgomery's 55-72 loss to Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State.

Brewster led the way in scoring for the Orange & Black in her season debut, connecting on five shots from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. Catlin Carter was the only other Warhawk to break double figures, finishing with 12 points.

The Warhawks were able to fight with the Lady Blazers throughout the game before falling 72-55. AUM trailed only by five points to begin the fourth quarter before ultimately dropping to 0-3 to start the 2020-21 season.

"I thought we played a really good three quarters against the best team in the conference" head coach Sean Page said. "We were shorthanded tonight and just ran out of legs down the stretch. Plenty to build on for tomorrow and down the track."

Derienne Black and Carter were able to keep the Warhawks within striking distance to begin the first quarter, as the Lady Blazers were able to jump out to a 7-4 lead before going on a run to take an 11-4 lead in the middle stages.

Seven-straight points from Karlie Jones and Makaylla Bullard tied the game at 13 with two and a half minutes remaining in the opening frame, but late free throws as time expired in the first gave the Lady Blazers a 18-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

Defense prevailed in the second quarter as both teams were only able to muster seven points on offense. Carter was able to grab five points with a pair of layups and a free throw, while Black knocked down a jumper to start action in the second for AUM.

Both Valdosta State and AUM were able to find their strokes offensively to start the second half. A quick jump shot from Black followed by a 3-pointer from Brewster, gave the Warhawks their first lead of the game. However, an 8-3 run to close out the third period gave the Lady Blazers a 49-44 lead going into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was dominated by Valdosta State as they jumped out to a 10-3 run to open up the final frame, extending their lead to 59-47. Three free throws from Jamya Tyus were the only points the Warhawks could muster in the middle stages of the fourth, allowing Valdosta State to run out to a 69-50 lead and an eventual 72-55 win over AUM.

The Warhawks will play their second game in as many days against Valdosta State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
