CLEVELAND, Miss. ----- The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team dropped a 66-41 Gulf South Conference road contest to Delta State Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
NOTES
- The Warhawks fell to 10-11 on the season and 3-10 within the GSC.
- The Lady Statesmen improved to 15-5 overall and upped their conference record to 8-5.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Senior
Victoria Morales posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She also matched a career-high with six blocked shots.
- Sophomore
Jordan Brewster scored in double figures for the 12th time this season, scoring a team-best 15 points. All 15 points came from behind the arc and in the first half of the game.
- Senior
Alex Brown scored three points in a season-high 12 minutes off the bench.
- Quantesha Patterson and Zyaire Ewing each posted double-doubles for Delta State. Patterson tallied a game-high 18 points, while adding 10 rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocked shots. Ewing tallied 15 points and 14 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warhawks took a 6-4 lead at the 7:37 mark of the first quarter after a trey by Brewster, but the Lady Statemen answered with a 14-0 run over the next 3:19, capped by a lay-up by Patterson. Brewster hit two more 3-pointers in the quarter and junior
Roni Richardson added a late basket, but AUM trailed 17-14 after one quarter.
- The Warhawks converted just 2-of-14 shots from the field in the second quarter, as Delta State opened up a 32-23 halftime lead by outscoring AUM 15-9 in the quarter. Brewster added two more 3-pointers, while Morales hit a pair of free throws and senior
Aaliyah Milord added a single free throw to complete the scoring for the Warhawks. Despite trailing by just two points, 23-21, with 5:37 remaining in the second quarter, AUM was outscored 9-2 down the stretch and trailed by nine at the intermission.
- After alternating baskets to open the third quarter, Delta State stretched its advantage to 47-27 with a 13-2 spurt over an eight-minute span. Milord ended the run with a jumper with 42 seconds remaining in the quarter, while Brown added a free throw with three seconds remaining. AUM trailed 47-30 after three quarters.
- The Warhawks scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, two by Morales on a basket and two by junior
Catlin Carter from the free throw line, to pull within 47-34 with 8:44 remaining in the game. The Lady Statesmen extended the lead to a game-high 66-36 advantage, with 1:57 left in the contest. AUM closed the contest with the final five points, three from sophomore
Sarah Creanor and two more from Brown to provide the final margin.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Warhawks converted just 24.1 percent of their shots from the floor, finishing the game 13-of-54 from the field. Delta State finished 25-of-64 from the floor, good for 39.1 percent.
- AUM made six 3-pointers in the game, five of which came from Brewster, while the Lady Statesmen hit just 3-of-14 from behind the arc.
- Delta State won the rebounding battle 46-38, including 14-9 on the offensive end. The Lady Statesmen outscore the Warhawks 17-8 in second-chance points.
- AUM forced 15 turnovers, leading to 13 points, while it committed 20 miscues, leading to 22 Delta State points.
- The Lady Statesmen held a commanding 22-6 advantage in scoring in the paint.
