Lady Choctaws Clip Warhawks In GSC Play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell to Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College at home on Saturday afternoon by a score of 69-61.

NOTES
- AUM loses its fourth-consecutive game and falls to 10-12 on the year with a 3-11 mark in conference play   
- Mississippi College improves to 9-12 overall with a 6-9 record in GSC action.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Catlin Carter stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
- Victoria Morales led the team with 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds.
- Jordan Brewster knocked down three triples en route to a 15-point performance.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws grabbed the first four points of the game against the Warhawks thanks to two scores in the paint by Moriah Hurst. AUM responded with a quick 7-0 run with contributions from Morales and Brewster. A 3-pointer from Mississippi College tied the game at seven in the early going but Carter was able to net a jumper to give AUM another short lead. The Lady Choctaws opened up a big lead late in the first quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 1:15 to go in the first. The Orange & Black were able to muster up a few points from Brewster and Alexia Wallace, but AUM trailed 18-13 heading into the second quarter.  
- The beginning of the second quarter was all AUM. The Warhawks were able to grab the period's first six points to take a quick 19-18 lead. The second saw both teams trade multiple scores throughout the early stages of the quarter, and it resulted in a 29-25 Mississippi College lead at the first media timeout. The Warhawks found its offensive groove after the timeout, taking seven of the next nine points to cut the Lady Choctaw lead to 33-32. However, MC closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take an eight-point lead going into the half.
- Mississippi College added three more points right out of the gate to begin the second half to run their scoring streak to 10-0. Two free throws from Morales ended the Lady Choctaw run, and cut the AUM deficit to 41-34. The Warhawks got their first true basket of the second half when Morales hit a midrange jumper and on the following AUM possession knocked down a driving layup in the paint to keep AUM within striking distance. The Warhawks, then, went on a 5-2 spurt to narrow the Mississippi College lead to four with 4:24 remaining in the third. However, MC took six of the next 10 points to run into the second quarter with a 53-47 stronghold over the Orange & Black.
- The Warhawks brought the game back to within four with two free throws from Jemaiya Lee 20 seconds into the fourth. Five-straight points from Mississippi College reextended the Lady Choctaw lead to 58-49 moments later. A jumper from Morales and a free throw from Carter kept the team within striking distance momentarily, but a scoreless drought from both teams kept the game at 60-52 for over two minutes. The scoring picked back up after the media timeout with points from both teams. Five-consecutive points brought the Warhawks to within three points with 2:09 left to play in the game. The Lady Choctaw defense stood strong to close out the fourth quarter, limiting the Warhawk offense in the dying moments of the game, and finishing the game offensively on a 7-2 run to win the game 69-61.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Warhawks shot 23-59 from the floor to go 39%.
- AUM landed five 3-pointers in the game.
- The Orange & Black converted on 10 of 13 free throws.
- AUM had the edge in rebounding, gaining 35 rebounds to MC's 32.

UP NEXT
AUM women's basketball will continue the back-nine of their schedule with a road game against the Shorter Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 13. The game from Rome, Ga., is set to begin at 4:30 and will be the first of a quick two-game road trip.
