Men’s Basketball Falls in Final Seconds at West Georgia, 75-74

CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team fell to the University of West Georgia 75-74 in Gulf South Conference action on Thursday, Feb. 27 as the Wolves knocked down a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds left to clinch the victory over AUM.
 
The loss snaps AUM's five-game winning streak and brings their record to 15-12 overall and 10-9 in GSC play. 
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Maharrith Jackson logged his third 20-plus point performance in four games on the night, finishing with 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. 
- Carlos Bell accounted for 14 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists.
- Joshua Moore added 12 points and three rebounds, while Aaron Reddick notched nine points and eight rebounds. 
- Darrion Taylor dished out a team-high six assists while scoring three points. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warhawks jumped out to an 8-2 to lead over the first four minutes of action, with an old-fashioned three-point play by Jackson giving AUM a six-point advantage at the 16:16 mark in the first.
- The Wolves battled back over the next six minutes of game time, however, with a 19-2 run to claim a 21-10 lead with 10:23 to go until halftime.
- The Warhawks answered with a quick 7-0 run over the next three minutes, though, to make it just a 21-17 lead for UWG after a Moore three at the 7:34 mark.
- After seeing the Wolves rattle off a 15-3 run over the next three minutes to lead 36-20, AUM scored eight of the half's final 10 points to trail by a score of 38-28 at halftime.
- Both teams tallied seven points each to begin half number two, with the score reading 45-35 in UWG's favor with 17:08 left. 
- AUM was able to get back within five after a three-pointer by Bell at the 12:06 mark to make it 55-50 and went on to tie the game up at 55-all on a bank-shot three-pointer by Devorious Brown at the 11:09 mark.
- The lead swapped back-and-forth between the Warhawks and Wolves over the next few minutes, with AUM going up by four at 66-62 at the 4:41 mark on a layup by Reddick. 
- After coming back to tie the game at 66-all with 3:17 to go, West Georgia would go on to take a five-point lead with at 73-68 1:26 left, as the result of an 11-2 run over a three-minute period. 
- The Warhawks answered quickly to make it 73-71 and were able to get Stanley Davis to the free-throw line with 13 seconds left for three shots after drawing contact on a contested shot from beyond the arc. Davis knocked down all three to put the Warhawks up 74-73 with 11 seconds to go, but the Wolves would earn a trip to the line on the ensuing possession and knock down both shots in the final seconds to secure the win.
  
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- AUM shot 35 percent (10-28) in the first half and 48 percent (16-33) in the second half to finish at 42 percent (26-61) for the game.
- The Warhawks knocked down just five threes on the night, finishing at 22 percent (5-22) for the game. 
- The Warhawks won the rebounding battle over UWG, 38-37.
- The Orange and Black tallied 38 points in the paint, 21 bench points, 10 second-chance points, eight points off of turnovers and seven fast-break points. 
- Thursday's game featured 10 lead changes and five tied scores.
 
UP NEXT
- The Warhawks will close out their regular-season slate on Saturday, Feb. 29 against #9 Valdosta State. Prior to the 4:00 p.m. tip-off from the AUM Gymnasium, D. Taylor, Bell, Michael Bryant, Brown, Reddick and Moore will be recognized as a part of "Senior Day."
