Unearned Runs Loom Large in Baseball’s 9-6 Setback to Spring Hill College

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team surrendered a total of seven unearned runs, including six over the 6th and 7th innings, en route to falling 9-6 to the Badgers of Spring Hill College on Tuesday, Feb. 4 from the AUM Baseball Complex.

With the loss, AUM's record falls to 0-4 to begin 2020.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Dalton Cobb and Matthew Zielonko both logged a team-high two base hits on the day. Cobb and Zielonko both also scored a run, with Zielonko knocking a pair of doubles.
- Casey Henderson drove in a team-best two runs in the contest. Grayson Blackwell, Ko Powell and Bailey Mosley all also drove in a run.
- On the mound, starter Micah Henderson surrendered just one earned run over six innings of work. Henderson struck out a pair and did not issue a walk on the day.
- Sam Steigert and Logan Coleman combined to toss the final three frames, with Coleman striking out three batters over the last 1.2 innings of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Hill College got on the scoreboard first in the contest, breaking the 0-0 tie in the first on an RBI groundout and notching their first unearned run in the fourth on an RBI single through the right side.
- The Warhawks would answer back with a run in each of their next two at-bats in the 4th and 5th innings. AUM used a Zielonko double in the fourth that plated Cobb, and an RBI fielder's choice from C. Henderson to score pinch-runner Seth Oglesby in the 5th and make it a 2-2 ballgame.
- The Badgers got three of their four unearned runs in the 6th on one swing of the bat, as a three-RBI double put Spring Hill back on top at 5-2. A throwing error with two outs one batter earlier helped prolong the inning and give the Badgers extra run-scoring opportunities.
- SHC added another run one batter later when a throwing error bought home the fourth unearned run of the inning to make it a 6-2 game in favor of the Badgers.
- AUM quickly responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, however. A Blackwell RBI single to right, a Mosely RBI walk, a Powell RBI hit-by-pitch and a C. Henderson suicide squeeze bunt accounted for the Warhawk's damage done in the frame.
- The Badgers would go on to take the lead for good in inning number seven. A fielding error to start the frame set the Badgers up for the inning, as they'd follow up with a two-RBI single a few batters later that brought home one unearned run, and a two-out single through the left side that brought home another unearned run.
- The Warhawks got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out and runners on first and second. AUM went down swinging for the final two outs of the game, however, giving way to the 9-6 final.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks scored a season-high six runs on the day and were outhit just 10-8 by the Badgers.
- AUM pitching matched a season-high with six strikeouts while issuing out just one walk on the afternoon.
- The Orange and Black reached base to lead off an inning in four of nine frames, but went just 4-20 with runners on base and stranded 10 base runners.

UP NEXT
- The Warhawks will kick off a three-game weekend series at Embry-Riddle University with a Friday, Feb. 7 contest at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
