Statesmen Take Game One of GSC Series Over Warhawks

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped game one of their three-game Gulf South Conference series 10-0 in eight innings to the Statesmen of Delta State University on Friday, March 6 from Ferriss Field.
 
With the loss, AUM's record falls to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in GSC play.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Matthew Zielonko led AUM with a pair of base hits on the night.
- Dalton Cobb added a double to extend his current hitting streak to 15 games. 
- Tyler Britton, Tommy Vickers and Jackson Gantt all registered scoreless relief outings out of the AUM bullpen, with Britton tossing a scoreless sixth inning. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delta State logged their first three runs of the game in inning number two, needing just one hit to do so. The Statesmen took advantage of four bases on balls issued out in the frame, while getting an RBI single through the right side, an RBI walk and an RBI sac fly to account for the damage.
- The Statesmen pounded out four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles, to extend their lead to 5-0.
- After adding a run in the fifth on an RBI double and another in the seventh on an RBI hit batsman, the Statesmen tallied three runs in inning number eight to get them to double digits. DSU led off the eighth with a home run, and got a pair of RBI singles to give way to the mercy-rule victory. 
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Delta State outhit AUM in the game, 12-3. 
- Micah Henderson (2-2) shouldered the loss in game one, allowing five earned on five hits in 3.1 innings of work.
- AUM reached base to lead off an inning in four of eight frames, while DSU got a leadoff baserunner on only twice in the game. 
- The Warhawks used eight different pitchers on the night. 
 
UP NEXT
- The Warhawks will finish off their three-game set against the Statesmen with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m.
