MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team dropped a home contest to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida on Monday night 64-59 at the AUM Gymnasium.
"Disappointing that when the game was on the line, and you needed to get a defensive rebound, you can't" said head coach
Sean Page."You give up three or four offensive rebounds on a single possession because you refused to box out. We made more shots than they did, shot the ball at a better percentage, and when the game was on the line, we refused to be tough and physical, and they got us beat."
The Warhawks fail to get their first win of the season and drop to 0-5 during the 2020-21 campaign. Meanwhile, West Florida picks up their second victory of the year, improving to 2-4.
Catlin Carter once again led the Orange & Black in scoring, connecting for a game-high 16 points for her fourth 10-point performance this season. Guards
Jordan Brewster and
Jamya Tyus also registered double-digit points, with each player netting 11 scores.
The game began with a back and forth offensive battle with the Warhawks sharing the wealth offensively. Two free throws from
Derienne Black opened the scoring for AUM, with Brewster, Carter, and
Makaylla Bullard contributing on the scoreboard as well.
A pair of free throws from West Florida's Alex Haymond gave the Argos a 16-13 lead late in the fourth quarter, but a driving layup from Carter with 15 seconds remaining in the first cut the UWF lead to one heading into the second period.
Tyus was a second-quarter standout for the Orange & Black as she scored nine of the first 11 AUM points to eventually give the Warhawks a 28-22 lead over West Florida with just under four minutes remaining in the half.
AUM would go cold from the floor to close things out in the first as a
Sarah Creanor jumper was the last of the AUM scoring, leaving the door open for West Florida to tie the game at 30 heading into the halftime break.
The Warhawks attacked the paint to open the third quarter with points from Carter and Black in close kept the game tied at 38 halfway through the third.
Alexia Wallace entered the game and had an immediate impact on AUM's offense, netting a pair of layups, including one at the buzzer, to give the Orange & Black a one-point lead after three periods of play.
AUM would go cold from the floor to start the fourth quarter as two minutes of game time expired before the Warhawks' first field goal. A 6-0 Argo run gave West Florida a 56-47 lead with six minutes left in the fourth.
A Wallace layup and a Brewster 3-pointer cut the West Florida lead to two with three and a half left on the clock. With under 90 seconds to play in the game, freshman
Savannah Nunn knocked down a mid-range jumper to get AUM to within one.
The Warhawks, however, were unable to score from that moment on as the Argos grabbed late free throws on their way to a 64-59 win.
AUM's season continues this weekend as they will travel to Rome, Ga., to take on the Shorter Hawks in a weekend series. The first game will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 15.
