VALDOSTA, Ga. – A lengthy scoring drought in the second half doomed the Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team in a 66-47 road Gulf South Conference loss to Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon.
The Warhawks slip to 0-4 to start the season after the loss to the Lady Blazers on Sunday. Head coach
Sean Page said, "Another good first half but we were unable to maintain it. We will learn from this and get better."
Senior guard
MaKaylla Bullard led the team in scoring for the second time this season, knocking down five baskets, including three 3-pointers, to net 13 points on the afternoon.
Catlin Carter registered 10 points, marking the third time in four games this season she has finished in double figures.
AUM was able to erase a 7-4 deficit early in the first quarter thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from
Jordan Brewster and Carter to give the Warhawks a 10-9 lead. Valdosta State would finish the quarter scoring six of the last eight points to bring a 15-12 lead into the second period.
The Warhawks were able to pair stout defense with efficient shooting to start the second quarter, as points from
Derienne Black and Brewster gave the Orange & Black a 17-15 lead. AUM was able to hold the Lady Blazers scoreless from the field for almost two minutes before a Jirah Ards layup gave VSU a two-point lead.
Bullard would score the Warhawks' last 11 points of the first half to try to keep the Orange & Black within striking distance. However, AUM would head into the halftime break trailing 33-27.
The senior's layup at the 2:27 mark of the second quarter would be the last basket scored until a
Karlie Jones layup six minutes into the third quarter broke the scoreless drought for the Warhawks. Jones' layup only cut the Valdosta State lead to 47-29, and the Lady Blazers would take a 55-31 lead into the fourth.
Carter did her best to keep her team in the game early in the fourth quarter, scoring AUM's first seven points of the period. However, a continued Valdosta State offensive attack ensured the Lady Blazers would come away with a victory, defeating AUM 66-47.
The Warhawks will have a lengthy break after their game against Valdosta State this afternoon. AUM's next contest will be Tuesday, January 12 at 6 p.m. against West Florida. The game from the AUM Gymnasium is a rescheduled game from the canceled series that was scheduled for December 18-19.
