MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team fell 92-76 to the University of Montevallo Falcons on Friday, Jan. 29 in their return to the court following a 20-day hiatus from play due to postponements.
The Falcons sank eight of their final nine shots over the last ten minutes of the game, including four of five three-point shots and 10 of 10 free throws, while outscoring AUM 30-16 to clinch the Gulf South Conference victory.
With the loss, AUM's record drops to 1-4 on the season while Montevallo improves to 3-0.
Three Warhawks tallied double-digit points, led by
Stanley Davis's career-high 24-point night. The senior guard knocked down seven of 12 shots, including six of nine from downtown.
Maharrith Jackson finished just one board shy of a double-double with a 15-point, 9-rebound performance while
Jeremiah Bozeman scored 10 points with three assists and a pair of rebounds. Junior forward
James Graham showed flashes of explosive play in his debut for the Warhawks, scoring seven points and grabbing three rebounds.
AUM opened up the contest by knocking down four of their first eight, including a pair of threes from Davis, to grab an early 13-6 advantage over the Falcons at the 13:38 mark.
The Warhawks went up 19-11, their largest lead of the game, at the 11:04 mark on a layup from
Roderick Smith. Montevallo would respond, however, with a 14-3 run over the next four minutes to take their first lead of the game at 25-22 with six minutes to go until halftime.
AUM trimmed their lead to as few as just two points several times over the final six minutes of the half, but would trail 41-36 at the break.
Both teams scored 14 points over the first five minutes of half number two, with the score reading 55-50 in Montevallo's favor at the 14-minute mark.
Graham sent the crowd at the AUM Gymnasium into a frenzy at the 12:39 mark when he powered his way to the basket with a finesse spin move, all while drawing contact for a foul and completing a three-point play to tie the game at 55-55.
It was Graham once again that got the Warhawks back to within two points at the 10:23 mark in the second, with a layup to bring the score to 62-60 before the Falcons would go on their late-game tear to create separation between them and AUM in the score column.
The Warhawks shot four of 10 from the floor over the final ten minutes while going 1-2 from three-point land and seven of 10 from the charity stripe. AUM finished the game shooting 47 percent (25-53) on all field goals, 52 percent (10-19) on threes, and 84 percent (16-19) on free throws.
The men's basketball team will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host Montevallo in a rematch from the AUM Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m.
