UWF Claims Weekend Rematch With Warhawks, 78-70

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team fell 78-70 to the Argonauts of West Florida on Saturday, Jan. 9, just four days after knocking off UWF in Pensacola on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

The loss brings AUM record to 1-3 on the season, with West Florida sitting at 2-1.

Stanley Davis and Roderick Smith combined for 44 points on Saturday, with both going for career highs in scoring. Davis tallied a game-high 24 points on 10 field goals while Smith accounted for 20 points with five rebounds on eight field goals.

Maharrith Jackson logged his second double-double of the week, finishing with 16 points and 10 boards.

Both teams traded blows over the games first eight minutes, with West Florida leading 11-9 over AUM at the 11:58 mark. Leading 17-14 at the 10:22 mark, UWF would be able to create some separation between them and the Warhawks by knocking down four of their next five field goals on a 10-2 run to lead 27-16 with 6:15 remaining in the half.

Both teams would score 12 points on four field goals over the final five minutes to give way to the 39-28 halftime score.

UWF opened up the second half by scoring six of the period's first eight points to go up 45-30 at the 17:56 mark.  AUM would respond over the next five minutes, however, by knocking down six of their next 11 shots on a 16-7 run to cut UWF's lead to just 50-46 at the 12:43 mark.

Another untimely Argo scoring run would shift momentum back to the UWF side, as they would outscore AUM 15-2 from the 12:11 to the 8:34 mark to take a 17-point lead at 65-48 with 8:34 to play.

AUM would keep fighting over the final right minutes, however, cutting UWF's lead to eight points at the 4:09 mark and then six points with 22 second remaining before giving way to the final buzzer.

After knocking down 31 of 40 free throws in their victory over the Argos on Tuesday, the Warhawks made just 11 from the charity stripe on a season-low 15 attempts on Saturday.

Three-point shooting also played a key role in Saturday's contest. AUM converted on just 23 percent (5-21) of their shots from beyond the arc while the Argos sank 50 percent (10-20) of their three-point attempts.

The Warhawks will see a six-day hiatus from action before returning to the hardwood on Friday Jan. 15 against Shorter University. Tip-off from the AUM Gymnasium is set for 6:00 p.m.
