Warhawks Spoil Shorter’s Streaks In 3-1 Road Win

ROME, Ga. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team snapped Gulf South Conference foe Shorter's 10-game winning streak with a 3-1 win on the road on Friday night.

AUM brings their 2021 record to 13-8 on the year with a 5-3 record in Gulf South action. The Warhawks spoil Shorter's perfect start to the GSC schedule, as the Hawks slip to 7-1 in GSC play and 14-4 overall.

Nyah Whittlesey, the program's all-time kills leader, led the way in kills for the Orange & Black in the win over Shorter with 14. Meanwhile, Carla Butler notches another double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs.

The first set was dominated by the home team, as Shorter raced out to an early 8-3 lead over the Warhawks in the opening frame. After a kill from Maria Nicolau to run the score to 9-11, the Warhawks were able to use that as momentum to eventually take an 18-17 lead. The Hawks, however, maintained their course, and their offensive surged proved too much for AUM as the Warhawks fell 25-22 in the first set.

Set two was played much more even to start, though Shorter would eventually come away with a respectable 15-12 advantage. The lead was quickly evaporated as AUM would go on a 5-0 run to take the lead. The run featured kills from Whittlesey, Ylenia De Mango, and Keren Santana. The Hawks would come back to cut the lead to 21-20, but AUM pulled away with a 25-23 win in the second set to even the match.

AUM jumped out to one of their best starts to a set all season in the third frame. A Nicolau kill gave the Warhawks a commanding 15-9 lead over the Hawks. Shorter was able to eventually cut the AUM lead to 15-11, but the Warhawks answered with four straight to lead 19-11. The late run proved more than enough for AUM as they took the third set 25-16.

Similar to the second set, AUM found themselves behind in a critical point in the contest as Shorter held on to a 12-10 lead. The Hawks' lead was erased thanks to five consecutive points from the Warhawks that included a kill from Kyla Ffrench. Shorter stormed back to stay in the game by going on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 19. AUM, however, was determined to play spoiler as the Orange & Black took the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

The Warhawks will remain on the road for the second of a five-match road trip. The club will head to Cleveland, Tennessee, to take on Lee tomorrow at 1 p.m.
