HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – An 81st minute goal by senior
McKenzie Nowin helped guide the Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team to a 2-1 Gulf South Conference win at Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, Oct. 17.
With the win, AUM's record improves to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in GSC action. The victory also bolsters AUM's all-time advantage over UAH to 6-2 in eight matchups.
The Warhawk's drew first blood in the contest with a 33rd minute goal from
Mayson Jaindl, her team leading fifth of the season. Both
Sydney Shellhouse and
Gaby Walker helped set up the score, marking for both of their first assists in 2021.
The Chargers went on to notch the equalizer in minute number 55, which would hold for almost 26 minutes of game time until Nowin's right-footed strike would find the right side of the back of the net. The goal, Nowin's first of 2021, was set up by an
Anila Mantello shot that clanked off the left post for her GSC-leading seventh assist on the year.
"Today was a much needed bounce-back performance," Head Coach
Julianne Herrity said. "I'm super proud of the effort we put forth from start to finish to knock off a tough opponent in UAH."
AUM outshot UAH 10-8 in the contest while also edging the Chargers in shots on goal, 4-3. Jaindl and Nowin both took a team-high three shots each, with Nowin notching a team-best two shots on goal.
In goal,
Karla Gaytan stopped a pair of shots on the way to improving her 2021 record to 5-6.
The women's soccer team will hit the road again this upcoming weekend, with a Friday, Oct. 22 contest at Shorter up next. Kickoff fro Rome, Ga. is set for 4:00 p.m.
