CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Stingy goalkeeping from senior keeper
Alexander Kraus, combined with the game-winning golden goal via penalty kick from
Renan Diniz, propelled the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over the no. 18 Lee Flames on Saturday, Oct. 2.
The win improves AUM's record to 5-2-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The victory additionally bolsters the Warhawks' all-time record against the Flames to 15-5-4.
Diniz drew the penalty kick after getting fouled inside the box in minute number 101. The senior forward's game-winner served as his team-leading third of the season and broke a 320 minute scoreless drought in matches between the Warhawks and Flames dating back to the 2019 season.
Kraus finished the evening with five saves en route to collecting his third shutout of the season and improving his 2021 record to 5-1-1. The senior netminder turned away multiple shots at close range, including two critical saves on flush strikes from inside the box in overtime that kept the match alive.
The AUM backline held strong against a Flame offense that was averaging 2.43 goals per contest coming into the matchup. The backline of
Charlie Elliott,
Andrew Elkins,
Jamos Hauk and
Luke Wheeldon all tallied 90-plus minutes of work and held the flames to just eight shots taken on the night.
'I'm so proud of the lads and the effort that they put forth tonight," Head Coach
Matthew Thorne said. "Everyone put it all on the line tonight and battled all the way; massive performances all around."
AUM amassed a total of 13 shots on the night, with seven of them coming on frame. The Warhawks took six corner kicks while holding the Flames to just two.
The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 when they host the University of West Florida from the AUM Soccer Complex at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
