WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team fell to Barry University 3-0 in the finale of the Gulf South Conference, Sunshine State crossover tournament on Saturday afternoon to finish the tournament 1-2.
AUM falls to 15-10 while Barry improves to 11-6. The Warhawks are 6-3 in GSC action this season, while the Bucs stand at 5-6 in Sunshine State action.
Maria Nicolau led the offensive charge for the Warhawks in the crossover's finale, netting seven kills while adding three blocks and a dig.
The Warhawks got out to a hot start to open the match against Barry as the Orange & Black jumped out to a 9-3 lead. A
Keren Santana ace pushed AUM's lead to 13-8, but the Bucs responded with a 6-1 run to tie the game at 14. The Warhawks responded with a 7-0 run to create a 21-14 distance, but Barry answered with a 6-0 run of their own. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the set and ended with Barry taking a 27-25 win.
Barry began the second frame with a commanding lead and raced out to an 11-4 lead. Barry was able to keep their distance over AUM for the remainder of the set as the Warhawks got as close as 22-14 before falling to the Bucs 25-14.
Set three saw the first 20 points of the frame split between the two squads, resulting in a 10-10 tie. After
Carla Butler's ace to push the AUM lead to 14-12, the Bucs were able to net five straight points to take a 17-14 lead. AUM pushed to cut the Barry lead, but the Bucs pulled away with a 25-21 set three win to take the match 3-0.
The Warhawks will return to Gulf South action for their next contest on Friday, October 29, when they host Union University at 6 p.m. from the AUM Gymnasium.
