Isadora Nicolai Enters Elite Status Despite 3-1 Loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite the Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team's 3-1 home loss to Gulf South Conference foe Union on Friday night, senior setter Isadora Nicolai became the first player in program history with 3,000 career assists.

Nicolai has now registered 3,011 career helpers, with 812 coming from Lynn University and the remaining 2,199 coming as a Warhawk. She needed 20 assists to get to her milestone and finished the match with 31.

Keren Santana stole the show during Friday's affair, she posted 17 kills with 16 digs which kept the Warhawks alive late in the match. Carla Butler had the lead in digs overall with 20, while Amber Bretwisch contributed to the offensive attack with 24 assists.

With the win, Union jumps AUM for fourth place in the GSC with a 7-3 conference mark while the Warhawks fall to fifth with a 6-4 record in GSC play.

The first set was played evenly between the two teams as the first 16 points of the contest were divided up between the two sides. Union was able to go on the first run of the game, taking three in a row to take an 11-8 lead. AUM answered with four straight to take a 12-11 advantage. With the Warhawks cutting the lead down to 22-21 late in the set, the Lady Bulldogs put an end to the AUM rally, taking the next three points to take the set 25-21.

Set two was a different story as AUM raced out to a 13-6 lead over the Lady Bulldogs with the help of Nicolai's serves. The second set was essentially put to rest after the Warhawks' 6-0 run to go ahead 22-11. AUM didn't look back as they evened up the match at 1-1 after taking set two 25-15.

The Warhawks again were able to jump out to a lead in the third frame, taking a 10-7 lead after an attack error from Union. AUM wasn't able to register any sustained offensive momentum in the middle stages of the third, falling behind 22-18. The Warhawks, however, showed some life by taking three consecutive points to cut the lead to 22-21, but Union was able to pull away with a 25-23 win.

In a deciding fourth set for Union, AUM was able to jump out to a 15-12 lead after a Santana ace broke a back and forth affair. After a timeout, Union was able to respond with a 5-1 run to pull ahead 17-16. AUM was able to answer with three straight points to pull ahead 20-18 before the Lady Bulldogs came back to tie the set at 22. To finish the game, Union would take three of the next four points to take the fourth set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
