Volleyball Avoids A Spook With 3-0 Win Over CBU

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team avoided a scare and a two-game losing streak with a convincing 3-0 win over Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Warhawks improve to 16-11 overall with a 7-4 record in GSC action. Christian Brothers, meanwhile, continue to struggle, dropping their 17th straight game.

The middles for AUM once again handled the opposition, recording 17 kills, with Ylenia De Mango netting a team-high nine kills and Maria Nicolau recording eight.

Setters shined again for AUM as after Isadora Nicolai recorded her 3,000th career assist in her last match, she netted 19 more while Amber Bretwisch contributed 17 helpers.

The beginning of the first set featured a back and forth battle with neither side able to get an extended advantage over the other. A 14-14 stalemate was broken with a kill from Keren Santana that sparked a 6-0 run for the Warhawks. AUM finished the set by taking six of the last seven points to win 25-16 over the Lady Bucs.

Led by Giada Pais-Marden in the second set, AUM was able to jump out to a 10-7 lead after struggling out of the gate in the first frame. Christian Brothers had an answer with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 10 before eventually taking a 12-11 lead. The Warhawks answered with three straight points of their own to take a 19-15 lead and would never surrender their advantage for the remainder of the set, winning 25-22.

The start to set three was almost a carbon copy of the second set as the Orange & Black again got off to a 10-7 start. With the Warhawks hanging around late in the set but trailing 17-15 to CBU, a Santana kill started a 3-0 run that was capped off by a Bretwisch ace to take an 18-17 lead. After the Lady Bucs cut the lead to 21-23, AUM was able to bury the Bucs by taking the final two points of the match to take the third set, 25-21, and the match 3-0.

The Warhawks will remain at home and will finish their three-match homestand with a GSC showdown with the UAH Chargers. The action is scheduled for Tuesday, November 2, and will begin at 6 p.m.
