Warhawks Clinch Third-Consecutive Playoff Berth After 3-0 Drubbing Of Valdosta State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After playing their first game since November 2, the Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team punched their ticket to the Gulf South Conference tournament after a commanding 3-0 win over Valdosta State.

The Warhawks clinch a spot in the postseason for the third-straight year and improve to 17-12 on the year. Valdosta State, meanwhile, drops to 12-19 on the year as they struggle to sneak into the conference tournament.

Giada Pais-Marden was the best offensive player on the court Friday night, leading both teams with 14 kills. As a team, AUM hit .295 on the night and held Valdosta State to a .084 hitting percentage.

AUM struggled out of the gate in the first set, falling way behind the Lady Blazers 8-3 in the early going. After a timeout to help compensate, AUM was able to use a block from Kyla Ffrench and Amber Bretwisch to cut the lead down to 15-13. With the score tied at 21, AUM was able to take four of the last five points to go up 1-0 on VSU after the first set of play.

The start of set two was written almost identically to the first frame as once again, the Lady Blazers were able to hold a 9-4 advantage over the Warhawks. With Valdosta State leading 11-8, AUM rattled off nine straight points to take a 17-11 lead and would not relinquish it, as they took the second set 25-14.

Set three played much more even as the first 20 points of the set were split between the two teams. With the game still tied at 13, AUM went on another huge run of eight straight points that was capped off by a Nyah Whittlesey ace to take a 21-13 lead. AUM continued the pressure to take the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

AUM will wrap up their home regular-season schedule tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. against No. 7-ranked West Florida. Before the match, the Warhawks will honor five seniors, Whittlesey, Maria Nicolau, Carla Butler, Tatjana Trifkovic, and Ashley Hudson.
