MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite Auburn University at Montgomery freshman guard Allasha Dudley's 22 points, AUM fell 57-51 to Gulf South Conference foe Delta State at home on Sunday afternoon in the conference home opener.
The Warhawks fall to 4-3 on the year and have dropped their first two GSC games. Delta State improves to 5-3 with a perfect 3-0 record in GSC action.
Dudley was fantastic again for the Warhawks, leading AUM in scoring with 22 points. The Warhawks spread out their rebounds throughout the roster, but Demaurea Moore led the way in rebounding with six.
Defense prevailed to begin the first quarter as Delta State jumped out to a modest 5-0 lead with five minutes to go in the first quarter. AUM would go 2-12 from the floor in the first quarter and would go into the second period trailing 10-4.
It was Dudley and the Warhawks who were able to answer the bell to begin the second quarter. A pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from the freshman cut the Lady Statesmen lead to three. The Warhawks were able to hold Delta State scoreless for almost four minutes before a 3-pointer broke their streak and extended DSU's lead to five. AUM would finish the first half on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 17, heading into halftime.
Teams would trade baskets to begin the third quarter, but defense was prevailing once again to begin the third frame, resulting in a 21-21 deadlock with 7:30 left in the third. Catlin Carter would give AUM its largest lead of the day after converting a three-point play to give the Warhawks a 29-25 lead to cap off a 6-0 run. Dudley's hot shooting in the third quarter gave AUM a 36-31 lead after three.
AUM brought a three-minute scoreless streak into the fourth quarter, allowing Delta State to cut the Warhawks' lead to one early in the fourth period. Delta State capped off a 14-2 run to take a four-point lead over AUM with six minutes to go. The Warhawks were able to get the Delta State lead to six with a minute to go. However, the Warhawks' comeback would not be enough as AUM fell to Delta State 57-51 at home.
The Warhawks will continue their Gulf South Conference schedule and will hit the road again on Saturday, December 18, when they travel to Pensacola, Florida, to take on West Florida. The action against the Argos is set to begin at 2 p.m.
