PENSACOLA, Fla. – Despite freshman
Kailyn Farrell's first career double-double, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida 76-62 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Warhawks drop their third-straight game and fall to 4-4 on the year and 0-3 in conference play. After receiving votes in the latest national polls, West Florida wins their ninth-straight game to improve to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in GSC action.
Catlin Carter led the Warhawks in scoring and registered her first 20-point game of the season and six rebounds. Farrell grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while registering 13 points for her first career double-double.
The Warhawks offense took control of the game right at the opening tip. AUM raced out to a commanding 8-2 lead over West Florida thanks to four early points from
Jamya Tyus. West Florida, however, would go on a run right after the first media timeout and took a 20-13 lead over AUM. The Argos would outscore the Warhawks in the first quarter 23-17.
AUM's defensive struggles would continue to begin the second period as West Florida extended its lead to 30-19. The Warhawks pushed back thanks to points from Tyus and Farrell to cut the Argo lead to seven, but West Florida commanded a 45-33 lead at halftime.
It was a slow shooting start to begin the second half as it took both teams almost two full minutes before registering a point. A slow-moving third quarter for the Warhawks resulted in a 15-point deficit after three quarters, trailing 57-42.
The Warhawks and Carter showed gumption to begin the fourth quarter, going on a potentially game-changing run to cut the West Florida lead to eight after a Carter fastbreak jumper with six minutes left. West Florida would put an end to the AUM comeback, and put the game away late with a 76-62 victory.
AUM will play their final road game of 2021 on Monday when they travel to No. 15 Valdosta State to take on the Blazers. The action from Valdosta, Georgia, is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
