Warhawks Drop Road Contest To #15 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Gulf South Conference foe and 15th-ranked Valdosta State used a 21-point third quarter to top the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team 64-72 on Monday night.

The Warhawks drop their fourth-straight game and fall to 4-5 on the year while remaining winless in GSC play in their first four attempts. Valdosta State jumps to 9-2 overall with a 4-1 mark in conference action.

Senior guard Catlin Carter registered her second consecutive 20-point game with a strong performance against Valdosta State. Freshman Kailyn Farrell led the team in rebounding against the Lady Blazers with five boards.

The Warhawks got off to a hot start in the beginning of the first quarter leading 8-5, thanks to the help from senior forward Demaurea Moore. Four minutes later, Valdosta State found themselves with an eight-point advantage after a strong run. The Warhawks, however, rebounded strong to close out the first, leaving AUM down by four after 10 minutes of action.

AUM's strong push to end the first quarter carried over in the second period. A Farrell jumper put AUM down by three early in the second. An 8-3 run from Valdosta State gave VSU another eight-point advantage. AUM brought the score to within four multiple times in the quarter, but Valdosta State led by six going into halftime.

Valdosta State controlled the play in the third quarter as they were able to push their lead to double-digits with three minutes left in the third quarter. Points from Derienne Black to close out the third kept the game within reach, as the Lady Blazers led 58-44 after three.

AUM used 3-pointers from Jordan Brewster and Monika Johnson to keep the game close late in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just nine points. However, Valdosta State's defense kept AUM off the board long enough to come away with a 72-64 win.

The Warhawks will close out the 2021 schedule with a home non-conference matchup with the Lane College Dragons. The contest against the SIAC foe is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on January 30.
