Warhawks Win Holiday Overtime Instant Classic 73-72

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team finished off an epic overtime thriller over Lane College 73-72 at home on Thursday afternoon to finish off the 2021 schedule.

AUM evens their record to .500 this season and now sit at 5-5 on the year. Lane College, meanwhile, falls to 6-4 on the year.
Kailyn Farrell scored a career-high 20 points in the win against the Dragons, including a pair of game-winning free throws. Jordan Brewster and Catlin Carter also netted double-digit points with a 15 and 10-point performance.

The Warhawks were able to benefit from the free-throw line in the first quarter, scoring nine of their opening 16 points from the line. The Dragons got off to a quick 6-3 lead before AUM would eventually cut the Lane lead down to 11-10. However, the offense would pick up toward the end of the quarter, and two late free throws from Allasha Dudley ended the first quarter with the Dragons leading 19-16.

Both teams struggled to begin the second quarter as seven points were scored in the first four minutes of the quarter, letting Lane keep a slight advantage over AUM. However, a 10-2 run from the Dragons at the media timeout stretched their lead to 11. Gracie Lee's first-career 3-pointer cut the LC lead to seven, but the Dragons would lead 34-29 at halftime.

AUM continued to shoot the ball well into the third quarter as Brewster was able to tie the game with a 3-pointer and extend the Warhawks' 10-2 run. The teams traded buckets back and forth throughout the middle stages of the third, with neither team able to gain a big lead. The Warhawks outscored the Dragons 22-8 in the third to lead 51-42 going into the fourth.

Lane started the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run to cut the AUM lead to 56-54 with under five minutes to play. A tie game with under a minute to go was broken by a Farrell layup to give AUM a 61-59 lead with 43 seconds to go. The Warhawks had the ball out of bounds with 0.9 seconds left and a tie game, but Dudley was unable to convert the layup, sending the game into overtime for the first time since 2017.

AUM raced out to a 9-3 run to open overtime to push their lead out to six at 70-64 with under a minute to go. The Dragons were able to cut the lead to 70-69 after a pair of baskets with 25 seconds left. After an acrobatic 3-pointer from Lane to give them a 72-71 lead, Farrell was fouled with 1.3 seconds left and converted both free throws to give AUM the 73-72 win.

The Warhawks will open the 2022 schedule with a home Gulf South Conference game against #25 Lee University. The action against the Lady Flames is scheduled for Sunday, January 2, at 1 p.m.
