Men’s Basketball Outgunned at Montevallo, 90-85

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Despite shooting a season-high 61 percent from the floor, the Auburn Montgomery Men's Basketball Team dropped its Gulf South Conference opener 90-85 at Montevallo on Saturday, Dec. 4.

With the loss, AUM's record drops to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in GSC action.

Isaiah Hart led a group of five Warhawks that scored in double figures with 20 points. The senior guard also posted a game-high five assists, four rebounds, and three steals while going 7-10 on all field goals.

James Graham hauled in a team-high six rebounds with 15 points and a team-high five blocks. The junior forward also shot 70 percent (7-10) from the floor.

Jeremiah Bozeman and Roderick Smith both tallied 14 points, with Bozeman adding four redounds and Smith with two. Sam Youngblood accounted for 10 points while Stanley Davis scored eight points with four assists in his 2021-22 debut.

AUM knocked down six of its first seven shots to begin the game and grab a 15-6 lead after a layup by Graham at the 14:49 mark.

After a quick 6-0 run put AUM up 21-11 at the 10:09 mark, Montevallo would come surging back with a 12-5 run over the next two minutes and change to cut its deficit to just three at 26-23 with 6:44 to go in the first. From there, the Warhawks would knock down five of their final eight shots in the half and outscore the Falcons 16-12 to take a 42-35 lead into halftime.

The Falcons took their first lead of the game after scoring 10 of the second half's first 12 points to go up 45-44 at the 16:38 mark. The lead would then waffle back and fourth between AUM and Montevallo until the Falcons took the lead for good at the 9:43 mark, 62-61.

The Falcons would go on to rattle of a 15-7 run over the next four minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 77-68 with 5:17 left. AUM would get as close as three points away on two different occasions, but defensive stops and successful trips to the free throw line by Montevallo helped put the contest away.

Three-point shooting proved to be the x-factor in Saturday's contest. The Falcons converted on 54 percent (13-24) of their threes while holding AUM to just 33 percent (5-15).

The Warhawk posted a 61 percent (16-26) field goal efficiency in the first half and a clip of 60 percent (17-28) in the second. AUM scored 46 points in the paint while out-rebounding Montevallo 29-27.

Saturday's game featured nine lead changes and three tied scores.

The Warhawks will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at North Georgia for a 6:30 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
