Warhawks Drop Series Finale to No. 10 Lady Blazers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite a season-high 24 points from Catlin Carter, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell 67-52 to the No. 10-ranked Valdosta State Lady Blazers at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks were able to honor its three seniors before the game on Saturday, as Makaylla Bullard, Jessika Milton and Alexia Wallace were all recognized for their contributions to the women's basketball program at AUM.

With the win, Valdosta State claims the series sweep over the Warhawks for the 2020-21 season, winning all four meetings. VSU rises to 16-2 on the year, while AUM remains winless in nine tries.

Valdosta State picked up right where they left off to begin the action from the AUM Gymnasium as they raced out to seven-consecutive points to take an early 7-0 lead to force an AUM timeout. Senior guard Milton was able to get the Orange & Black on the board in the first with five points of her own to run the score to 11-5.

Derienne Black was able to get on the scoresheet late in the first quarter with back-to-back layups to bring the Warhawks to within two points. However, late free throws from Valdosta State gave the Lady Blazers a four-point lead after one quarter of play.

Carter was able to find four early points in the second quarter to bring back the Valdosta State lead to two points. The Lady Blazers would find their offensive groove in the middle stages of the second, as they would go on a 9-1 run to push their lead to 29-18.

The Warhawks responded, however, with a flurry of offense to end the first half. The Orange & Black tallied the last six points of the second quarter to cut the Valdosta State lead to 31-27 at the halftime break.

The Lady Blazers found the first five points of the second half to negate most of the damage done by AUM to end the second quarter. Four more points from Carter kept the Warhawks close in the third momentarily, but a 13-0 run to close the third gave VSU a 51-34 lead.

A lackluster offensive quarter from AUM seemed to have been erased to begin the fourth quarter as the Warhawks netted the first six points of the fourth to cut the Lady Blazer lead to 11. A 3-pointer from Carter kept the VSU lead at 11 in the middle stages of the fourth, but the Lady Blazers would hold on to a commanding lead and would win the contest 67-52.

The Warhawks will hit the road for the final time this season as they will play the next four games away from home. AUM will travel to Shorter for a midweek bout with the Hawks on February 16 at 5 p.m.
