Carter’s Career Night Lifts Warhawks Past Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Behind a career-high 28 points from Catlin Carter, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team earned their first win of the year after defeating Gulf South Conference rival Shorter 70-55 on Tuesday night.

The Warhawks capture their first win in 10 tries and even the season series with Shorter, while the Hawks fall to 2-13 on the year.

Carter netted a career-high 28 points that led all scorers in the game. She also grabbed 11 rebounds on her way to a double-double. Jamya Tyus contributed 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to AUM's victory.

"It was a good team win," said head coach Sean Page. "We had contributions from a lot of players, and it gives us something to build on going into the last few games of the season."

A Savannah Nunn layup kicked off the game's scoring 68 seconds into the game. The back-and-forth battle between the Warhawks and Hawks was in full force through the first five minutes of the game as the Orange & Black were up 9-6 halfway through the first quarter.

A 10-2 run from the Warhawks, including seven points from Carter, gave AUM a 14-8 lead. Shorter would respond quickly in the late stages of the first period, earning a 16-16 tie with a late layup from Jasmine Gaines.

A 3-pointer from Jessika Milton gave the Warhawks another lead early in the second quarter, and after the triple, both teams would go cold from the field for three minutes. Tyus aided in a 10-0 run to propel the Orange & Black to a 28-20 lead.

Shorter would claw their way back into the game with a quick run of their own to cut the AUM lead down to two to force a 30-second timeout from AUM. The Warhawks would end the first half on a 6-2 run to go into the locker room with a 36-30 lead over the Hawks.

The third quarter started innocently enough, thanks to a quick jumper from Nunn. However, the Hawks would respond with a run to cut the AUM lead to 38-36. Shorter's offense would disappear for a while after the shot as the Warhawks would finish the third quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 52-39 lead going into the final frame.

The run would continue into the fourth quarter as five-straight points from Carter extended the lead even further for AUM. Gaines would score three of the next four points for Shorter to end the run momentarily. What transpired afterward was a back-and-forth battle, similar to that of the first quarter, leaving the Warhawks victorious for the first time this season, besting Shorter 70-55.

AUM will continue their season-long four-game road trip on Friday, February 19, when they travel to West Florida to take on the Argos. The game from Pensacola, Fla., is set to begin at 6:30.
