PENSACOLA, Fla. – After being down seven points to begin the fourth quarter, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team dropped a 66-54 road contest to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida on Friday night.
The Warhawks drop to 1-10 on the year after the loss, while West Florida continues to make a push for seeding and now stand with a 9-8 record.
"Really bad start, but I was proud of the effort in the second half," said head coach
Sean Page. "Hopefully, tomorrow we can put two good halves together."
Catlin Carter once again led the Warhawks in scoring with 14 points, while
Jordan Brewster (13) and
Jamya Tyus (12) joined Carter in scoring in double figures.
AUM captured the game's first five points thanks to an early 3-pointer from Brewster and a quick layup in transition from Tyus. West Florida would bring the game back to one before
Gracie Lee pushed the lead back out to three with a layup. An 8-0 West Florida run would end the first quarter with the Argos leading 12-7.
The Warhawks would claw back to tie the game at 12 after two good minutes of defense and points from Brewster and
Alexia Wallace. However, a 9-0 run from UWF gave the Argos a 21-12 lead midway through the second period.
Tyus and Lee were able to keep the game within reach for AUM, but despite late points from
Sarah Creanor and Carter, the Argos would close the first half on an 8-3 run to take a 31-19 lead into the halftime break.
AUM was able to start hot out of the gates after the intermission as the Warhawks were able to score seven consecutive points to cut the West Florida lead to 31-26. Brewster, Tyus and Carter all contributed to the Warhawks' early pressure in the third.
Teams would go on to trade scoring in the middle stages of the third quarter, but the early run matched with consistent scoring from the Orange & Black gave the Warhawks a seven-point deficit after three quarters of play.
Quick offense from Tyus and Brewster to kick off the fourth quarter brought the Warhawks to within two and forced an early West Florida timeout. A 9-2 run from the Argos followed their timeout to push the lead to 53-44.
AUM would have trouble holding off the Argo attack in the late stages of the fourth as West Florida would come away with a 66-54 win over AUM, clinching the season series over the Warhawks as well.
The Argos and the Warhawks will meet one last time in 2021 tomorrow afternoon when they play the fourth and final game of the series. The action from the UWF Field House is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
