Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest to Falcons, 83-74

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team shot 50 percent from the floor for just the second time this season against Montevallo on Wedsday, Feb. 17, but it would not be enough as the Warhawks fell 83-74 to the Falcons in Gulf South Conference play.

The Warhawks outscored the Falcons 36-30 in half number one, but a 53-point second half by Montevallo propelled them to the win over the Warhawks.

With the loss, AUM's record sits at 2-9 on the year, while Montevallo improves to 6-5.

Stanley Davis led all scorers with 22 points on a 9-19 shooting night. The senior guard also hauled in four rebounds.

Maharrith Jackson accounted for 13 points, while Deven Tucker pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. Tucker also registered eight points in the setback.

The Falcons scored seven of the game's first nine points over the first four minutes. AUM would come charging back by scoring nine unanswered, however, capped off by a put-back slam dunk from Tucker to put the Warhawks on top 11-7 at the 13:35 mark.

Montevallo would tie the score up at 18-all at the 9:16 mark, but AUM would rely heavily on low-post scoring to outscore Montevallo 18-12 for the remainder of the half and take a 36-30 lead into the break. The Warhawks tallied a total of 26 points in the paint in half number one, with 14 second chance points.

The turning point in the game for Montevallo came in the first six minutes of half number two when the Falcons outscored the Warhawks 22-6 from the 19:29 mark to the 12:51 mark to take a 52-42 lead. AUM turned the ball over 10 times over that stretch while only getting off four field goals.

AUM fought their way back into the game by outscoring the Falcons 17-11 over the next six minutes, with a Jackson three-pointer bringing the score to 61-59 in favor of Montevallo at the 6:18 mark.

The Falcons responded by scoring 13 of the game's next 17 points, however, to reclaim a double-digit lead at 74-63 with 3:03 to play. AUM outscored Montevallo 11-9 over the remaining time to give way to the 83-74 final.

The Warhawks scored 50 of their 74 points on the evening in the paint, marking for just the second time this season that AUM has tallied 50 or more points down low. The Warhawks posted just a 25 percent (4-16) clip from the three-point line while the Falcons shot 44 percent (8-18) from downtown, including a 6-12 performance from three in the second half.

The Warhawks will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 19 when they host West Florida from the AUM Gymnasium at 6:00 p.m. (CST)
