Women’s Basketball Puts Down Pesky West Florida Team in Road Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team was able to work around obstacles to capture a 52-49 win on the road over Gulf South Conference foe West Florida on Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks net their second win of the season while West Florida falls to 9-9 on the year. This was the final game of the 2020-21 season between these two teams.

Jessika Milton registered a season-high 11 points for the Warhawks in the three-point win. Catlin Carter led the way in scoring for AUM, netting a 14-point effort while also grabbing six rebounds.

"It was a great team win," said head coach Sean Page. "Extremely proud and happy for the players. They had to stick together and battle for it."

The Warhawk's start to the game was not what they wanted offensively, scoring just six points in the opening period. AUM was able to gain a 6-5 lead over West Florida before the Argos went on a 10-0 run to take the lead going into the second.

Milton and Jamya Tyus were able to get the Warhawk offense back on track. Milton knocked down a pair of 3-pointers while Tyus was able to sneak a layup in the paint to cut the UWF lead to one.

West Florida captured a four-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the half and would extend the lead with an 8-1 run to push their advantage to 24-16. AUM battled to end the first half, but the Argos led the Warhawks 32-23 at the halftime break.

The third quarter was a polar opposite from that of the first for AUM. A 9-2 run from AUM to open the half cut the Argo lead to three with three and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. West Florida added a jump shot late in the third, but the Warhawks pressed on the gas, scoring the final eight points of the third to take a 42-37 lead into the fourth.

West Florida brought the game back to within three early in the fourth quarter, but a Makaylla Bullard jumper pushed the Warhawk lead back to five with 1:41 left in the game. The Argos would tally just two free throws in the final two minutes of the game, leaving the
Warhawks with a 52-49 win over West Florida.

The Warhawks will end their four-game road trip on Tuesday, February 23, when they travel to Rome, Ga., for a rematch with the Shorter Hawks. Tipoff from Shorter is slated for 5 p.m.
